|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm the sort who's been known to read articles/stories and point out typos or misspellings, or at the very least, mentally pick at them :). However, when I do beta someone's work, I have no desire to be rude-I think you can be critical and honest without being mean. I feel guilty when I send someone's paper back and there's red marks all over! Sometimes it's not even a critique at all, sometimes I just like to make a note of a line or a scene or something that I liked, too, which I have done many times.
If a comment or critique I make doesn't make sense to you, or I misunderstand what you're trying to say in a scene, or something like that, I'm perfectly happy to clarify or be corrected and so on-please don't hesitate to respond and make sure everything's cleared up. I'm generally pretty quick with reading and responding with my thoughts-a couple days at the most, generally, depending on how long the story is and when I'm online and able to read it. If I do need to take longer, due to work or other real-life obligations, however, I will be sure to notify you ahead of time. I usually make my notes in red within the story document itself, but if there's another method that is easier for you, let me know and I'll be happy to work with that.
I love seeing the ideas people come up with, and I've met and became friendly with a few people through this sort of exercise. Hopefully that will be the case with whomever I wind up working with here.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Grammar and spelling are my big ones. I'll help make sentences clearer, catch typos or wrong choices of words (especially words that sound similar but are spelled differently), that sort of thing. I'm also happy to help a little bit with U.S.-related terms or topics for those who are from other countries. I can also work a little bit with characterization, and if you're struggling with the direction of the story or further ideas for it, I'm up for offering help there, too (though I will always leave the final decision about a story idea to you. It IS your story, after all. If you work with an idea of mine, cool, if not, that's totally fine, too).
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
As noted above, I can work with characterization if you want me to-but I also think there are others who have that part of things down WAY more smoothly than I do. Some fandoms I'd be better with that aspect of things in than others. And if you're looking for things such as medical/law jargon/accuracy, and so on, then yeah, not going to be of much help there. Also, if you want someone to just totally verbally trash the hell out of your fic, then go elsewhere for sure-I can't be that brutal.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I will beta for things related to the shows in my profile that I watch. I can and will do crossovers, too-if you're combining a show I watch with a show or movie I'm not familiar with, all I ask is that you give me some basic knowledge of said show or movie. Maybe some clips that would give me a good idea of what I'm dealing with, too. I'm open to nearly any kinds of stories-horror, angst, romance, humor, crack, gen, het, slash, AU, etc. And I can't think of any pairings within the shows I watch that I WOULDN'T beta for (save for any incest), so we're good to go there, too. I will do OCs, but I can help get them so they don't sound too "Mary Sue"/"Gary Stu" or whatever. Ratings aren't a problem, either.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Not a fan of mpreg, "de-aging" stories, incest, rape*, non-con, and physical abuse between any of the main characters in general. Also not a fan of adult/underage pairings (by "underage" we're talking 15 and younger, as 16 is a legal age in some areas in the States).
*Clarification: I have read a couple stories that involved that, but didn't realize that was involved until I got a bit of a ways in (no warning about it). That said, those stories also weren't glorifying rape, they were dealing with the horror and aftermath of it. In that sort of case, I can perhaps make an exception, depending on the story. Otherwise, if it's there just for kink purposes, then it's not my thing.
