|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've been reading fanfiction and roleplaying for over a decade now and have thoroughly enjoyed most everything I choose to read. Sometimes there are those great stories that just need that helping hand with grammar, syntax, spelling, or even just common information, especially if the writer doesn't speak English as a first language, and it is those stories that I want to help beta. I like to help put polish on the final result, but not have to completely rewrite someone's work. I realise that some people just need guidance to improve their work, however, I'm a medical student and don't have the time to sit down with a writer and go over a work piece by piece and explain why things work and why others don't. I love to go over general characterisation and help with plot points, but the stories I read have to be 90% ready to go by the time I beta them so that I only have to fix mostly aesthetic problems. I will also freely praise the parts I enjoy and try to provide constructive criticism for the parts I do not.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm a grammar and spelling queen. If you sometimes have problems with those two things, I'm usually pretty good at catching and correcting them. I'm also good at arranging syntax so sentences flow more freely. I can also be brutally honest about potential Mary Sues and plot holes or points that make little or no sense.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I do have my favourite characters and sometimes the way I see them will colour how I see a story. I am usually somewhat tactful, but in general, I try to be upfront and can come off as blunt. I'm a MUCH better reader and critic than I am a writer, lol, "those who cannot do, teach."
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I like BtVS, BtVS crossovers, Sailor Moon, Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys crossovers, Narnia fics, Stargate: SG-1, and some Silmarillion stories. Usually, I prefer Buffy-centric, Usagi-centric, Susan-centric, and Idril-centric works in their respective categories, but, in general, I'll work with any well thought out writing in the categories. I also prefer either one-shots, drabbles, or the intended 20,000+ word categories.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
No offense to anyone who likes them, but I will not beta any incest stories, any slash in the Narnia category, any particularly bad brutalisation stories, or anything with particularly twisted morality sets. I also will not read anything that doesn't already display a rudimentary sense of the basic novel-style of writing, like chat-based or shorthand, or anything that is ridiculously difficult to read. Also, of course, if you ask me to beta sometime that breaks the rules of FF.net, I will inform you that it does so and, if it is posted on the site, report it as a violation.
