|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Technically I'm new to this beta-reading thing. Friends have shown me their work, so I'm not unaccustomed to proof-reading it or offering my advice, ideas, and thoughts. I've done a lot of reading both on this site and outside of it, and so it's safe to say that I know good writing when I see it, and I know what I expect. I love reading, and I'm open to almost anything. That being said, I am generally not a very harsh, blunt critic. My goal is to help you improve your writing, so that writing in general approves. However, I am a bit of a stickler when it comes to following site rules. When it comes to my writing, I can be a bit of a perfectionist... but even I still have typos. I am not a Grammar Nazi, but it is necessary to have good grammar. Bad grammar or spelling is the quickest turn-off in a story. Furthermore, I believe in the importance of word choice and syntax, although I will not enforce them upon you. Sentence length, rhythm, and connotation are important in a story for aesthetic value.
To me, plot, characterization, and voice are the most important things in a story. You can't learn to have a voice. You've got to find it. As for plot, I tend to favor the unique... or, at least, a twist on an old plot. Stories should not be predictable. It is my firm belief that a good writer can turn the most obvious plot into a mystery and still leave his/her readers guessing.
I am detail-oriented, so I am willing to research and check facts, so if you perceive that I am unfamiliar with an area, you can still ask me to beta for you. I just might surprise you.
My expectations of anyone who wishes to acquire my services are really quite simple. I expect respect and kindness in return for respect and kindness. Open up your mind a little. Think outside the box. Don't be afraid to be different. Do what you love because you love it. Furthermore, an author/beta-reader relationship relies on mutual trust and, to a degree, friendship (or at least politeness/civility). I expect you to give me the benefit of the doubt, and I expect you to listen to me. You don't have to do what I recommend all the time, but you do, at least, have to consider it. Make some changes because I'm doing it for your own good, not my own. Finally, I expect you to be the best writer you can possibly be, or, at least, try to be.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm good at point-of-view, especially first-person. I am also good at planning out plots and coming up with plot ideas. I know how to grab an audience's attention and hold it, and am accordingly a master at achieving drama. I also pay attention to syntax and word choice. I excel at characterization, and have often been praised for my vivid descriptions of feelings that, in effect, put the reader in the narrator's place. I am also good at fixing most grammar and spelling mistakes as well as correcting awkward wording. Being detail-oriented to the point of being fastidious, I will research and avoid embarrassing factual errors. I am also, as a rule, usually quick to respond. I generally get along with people easily, and I am not needlessly harsh or critical.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm decent at making original characters, but they are, by no means, my forte. I am also somewhat unaccustomed to writing in third-person. Furthermore, I am not very critical in general. I am also lax on some grammar rules, such as run-ons. I can also be too descriptive and am prone to tangents in my own writing. I sometimes have problems with repetitiveness in my choice of words. There are also several genres in which I am sadly inexperienced, such as fantasy. My characters tend to think a lot, which can detract from what is actually going on. I am also bad at finishing stories and working on a timeline, and will sometimes attempt to hurry up to get a story moving in the direction I want. I also tend to be verbose. I find it hard to criticize people very strongly and tend to be too nice.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I would like to beta serious stories as opposed to bashing fics that make little sense and mock the area. I would also prefer to stick to more normal types of stories, such as angst, romance, general, drama, friendship and so on... I would also prefer to beta a story with a plot and maybe stories that are close to perfection but not quite there yet. Other than the things already listed and the preferences listed later on, I'm generally open to anything, but especially things I have a basic knowledge of. I am also comfortable with reading things others would deem "dark."
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
While I will betaread stories rated M, I am not particularly fond of smut, as it tends to be rather... disgusting and trashy. I just do not feel there is a way for me to properly do smut justice. I also do not like pointless bashing stories or stories that are unrelated to the subject area.
