|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hi, I'm Ruth. I'd like to do some editorial work, so here I am. I am usually very active. I can get on my laptop every week day from eight P.M. (GMT) until midnight, but often I get on my laptop before eight. I am good at picking out grammar mistakes, spelling mistakes and punctuation mistakes (except in my own writing -muttermutterdarklymutter-). I am good at writing dialects, keeping characters I know in character and making jokes, dramatic one liners, dialogue and plot holes. (Why did the shellfish assault the police officer? He was *prawn* to outbursts of violence. HAHAHA... yeah. I lied. I make terrible jokes.) I like to work on Google Drive ninety five percent of the time, but we can email either. If you know of any other sites that allow easy communication of long messages then feel free to suggest it!
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am imaginative. I can nurture plot holes, write sharp dialogue, correct and delete things that take away from a story and I can brainstorm. I can give you detailed analysis of what I think about your story so far. I can notice when a character is not acting like they should and mostly I can pinpoint what it is about them that is off. I'm good at spelling, I'm open to American or English (I used to laugh when people said that, but American people spell words differently, so I'm good with editing either). I am often very quick with feedback. I like to give back a lot of my thoughts on who I sympathise with, who I am mad with, the pacing, the dialogue and language. I am good with helping for dramatic scenes, chase scenes, fight scenes, kill scenes and emotional scenes. I'm so funny that people hit me with frying pans when I tell jokes. And that takes skill(ets. It takes skillets.)
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am usually bad with fluff. I can review it no problem, but I cannot write fluff myself and very often can't give advice on it. Later on in the year I have important exams and will have less available time then. If I see your grammar is so bad that I can't understand it then I just can't do anything until you clarify. I typo a lot, and usually I spot it and correct it, but sometimes I miss it. I won't lie, I am not perfect by *any* measure, so sometimes I miss misspellings. Oddly enough, less so on other people's work than on my own. Sometimes your story just won't grip me and I might suggest something radical that you won't want to do. I'm not in the business of writing boring stuff. Sometimes I have a million ideas in one minute, then I forget them all. Sometimes I have no ideas whatsoever, but that doesn't happen often.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I love to deal with the heavy stuff. Character death, mental illness, violence, murder, emotional turmoil, suicide, sex. I can do almost anything except for fluff and some other stuff. But I do like all categories, not just the darker stories.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Fluff, male pregnancies, new characters that you have invented yourself that are perfect. I can do invented characters, but only if they are flawed and fit in well. I'm not interested in beta-ing for your Mary Sue.
