Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I spent four years as a primary editor for my high school literary magazine, and that experience completely killed any inclination I might have felt to be kind to bad writers who won't improve or listen to criticism. Years of technical editing for engineers have not improved my patience much. So if you're looking for straight affirmation, don't look here: I'll tell you honestly what sucks about your writing, and how to improve it. Phrasing, story, vocabulary, you name it: nothing's immune. If you can't handle being told that your entire premise is terrible, you don't want to work with me. The upshot of this is that when I tell you I like something, you don't have to worry that I'm blowing smoke up your ass. I really do like it. If your plot is good and your writing needs work, we can work with that; same if it goes the other way.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Grammar is my strong point. Additionally, I am very good at reading for continuity, fact-checking, and at keeping character voices separate. If you do naval fiction, I have a really strong grasp of the actual mechanics of sail, thanks to Patrick O'Brian, private research to supplement O'Brian, and some personal experience on sailing ships.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can be wordy and occasionally overuse the dash. I also love to love the semicolon and the colon. In seriousness, I'm not good at keeping up with obligations that I don't find interesting. However, hopefully we would be able to establish this early on in the relationship/story, rather than me leaving you hanging.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I like a good romance as much as the next person. I also like well-written, well-thought-out AUs. I like backstory, filler, and sequels. But most of all, I like an interesting plot.
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'm not into PWP. If the only reason your story couldn't be any boy with any girl (or whatever) is that you threw some character names on it, I'm not interested. Now, mature writing with character development or plot, that's just fine. Additionally, I strongly prefer canon pairings (or pairings that could be canon, if there is no canon pairing). I am willing to consider other pairings but there must be a good reason for it in the story. "Two unrealistic people suddenly realize they have feelings for each other" isn't good enough. This also rules out most slash pairings, but they can be considered on a case-by-case basis unless they are ruled out in the narrative. The only slash pairing I absolutely will not read is Aubrey/Maturin.
