|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
First thing you should know about me, I'm surprisingly serious. Not to say that I'll crack the whip on you or anything, just that I actually try really hard when I beta. See, I want to be a writer (vague as that term is) in the future, so I consider this to be sort of “training” for me. By reading through and critically considering other people's work, I can improve my own editing skills and learn from others. That is what I mean by “serious”. I do this for a real purpose, and I take pride in my editing. If you choose me as a beta, know that you're not getting some sloppy writer; you're getting someone who takes high level courses, and who really cares about the end result... That first part came off really hardcore, and I didn't actually mean for it to; I just wanted to make it clear that I care about what I do. The other aspect of my beta work is that I respect the original idea. I know the above stuff makes it seem like I'm just going to bulldoze you with my own style, but don't worry. I take active care in preserving the original style, dynamics, tone, and general content of the stories that I edit; I just do my best to polish it to a mirror-like gleam... I only want to be of service to those I edit for, so anything I can try and do for you would make me happy. I love editing, nerdy as that is, which means that I am eager to do my best. Hope to hear from you soon. Cheers!
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Some of my strengths include: 1) Grammar. I am a grammar Nazi. True story. I try my best to perfect the grammar of my own stories, and I hope to do so with those I edit. 2) Character development. Psychology is one of my passions, and I have a keen insight into the workings of a person's mind; their motivations, their fears. One of my favourite things when watching series or reading novels is to analyze the characters so that I can really understand them. When editing, I try my best to help you fully develop and rationalize the characters you choose, in the same way I do for my own pieces. 3) Poetic style. A favourite style of mine is the poetic or lyrical style; and its something I do quite well. That's when writing seems to flow almost like a song rather than just a story; with lots of adjectives and metaphors. I don't have to, but I can try and incorporate this into your story if you want. Not everyone likes this, but if your looking for it I'm happy to help. 4) I can do dark. My favourite stuff tends to be on the darker side, and I make dark, gritty stuff more believable than just your average toneless angst. Violence and anger and all that good depressing stuff is on my list of personal experience, so if you want help pulling off believable angst, I'm your beta. 5) Non-humans. I like writing about things that are not entirely human, such as demons, spirits, half-humans, you name it. Honestly, I don't have many reservations at all about what you're into, as long as you don't make it really cookie-cutter. Warning: if you draft stock fantasy creatures, I will edit them to their very bones until we've created something original.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My weaknesses include: 1) Procrastination. I, myself, am a terrible procrastinator. I don't finish things on time and I find distractions anywhere I can. So don't expect any pushing from me, because if I can't motivate myself, I can't motivate you. As far as not finishing editing: as long as you give me a deadline, it'll get done. Just don't leave me hanging, I need expectations. 2) Action. My work is very inside the characters heads, so I'm not really the best for directing fast-moving portions of a story. I'm working on this, so don't count me out entirely, but it's not my forte. 3) Parody fluff. I. Am. Terrible. At parody. I'm actually so bad at it. I can't do a thing with comedic spoofs like that. So don't even ask about it, because I just can't. 4) Complete plot lines. I'm no genius at plots. I can make them okay, but I'm not the greatest. My worst problem, however, is that I don't complete them. I just can't make endings well at all. I'll edit an ending for you to make it more logical, but don't expect me to make one for you. Sorry.
