|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I figured that since I've been editing stories for a while now anyway, I might as well apply as a beta reader. If you're reading this, then thank you for even looking at my beta-reading profile in the first place. Let me tell you a bit about my writing and editing style. I am somewhat of a perfectionist, so I really like my stories (and the stories I edit) to be the best they can be. I am always looking for a better way of phrasing something, and I constantly look for feedback on my own stories so I can improve. Expect that when I read your story, I'll try my best to make it as awesome as it can be.
I come from a family of talented writers, harsh editors, and perfectionists. English has always been one of my better subjects in school, and I was actually copy editor of my school's newspaper my senior year. I was the only one who applied for it, but two others also got assigned to it. On our first issue, I ended up editing over half the stories that were set to be published. Whether that was because people actually wanted to edit their stories or because the two people I worked with were...otherwise occupied, I'm not sure. But my point is I have legitimate experience, and I plan to be a voracious yet meticulous editor, so don't get discouraged if you see some edits that seem overly /
As far as your end of the bargain, I would at least expect you to give your story a once-over before sending it my way. This includes spell checking and looking for grammar/syntax mistakes, but I would ideally like you to check things like sentence structure and word choice as well. I'm not gonna yell at you if you don't do these things - that's not the kind of person I am - but if it happens multiple times I'll definitely ask you to check your work more thoroughly before handing it over.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I think of myself as a nice guy, and am usually optimistic. I'm going to give you constructive criticism while also praising you on what you did right. My theory is that you'll remember what you did well if I bring it up, and will keep doing it at the same time as you build on what other comments I gave you. I'm adept at spotting spelling/grammar/syntax mistakes, and can utilize a pretty large vocabulary when I want to. As far as my own writing goes, people have commented that they like the way I describe things in detail, avoid mistakes that would take away from the even flow of the story, and can usually nail proper characterization on the first try.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I've been told I tend to use too wide a vocabulary sometimes, especially with colors. That's something I'm working on, and it's definitely not the worst habit to have. I also tend to be a people pleaser, and don't like to upset others, so I might not press you hard enough on an issue when I really should. If I tell you to work on something, I genuinely don't want to offend you, but want to make you into a better writer.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I love to read yuri stories, so just about any yuri is good with me. Hetero stories are great as well. For both of those, the romance genre is great and something I have experience with. Comedy, adventure, action and general slice of life type stories are also fair game. As far as the topic is concerned, I'm most comfortable with the animes Lucky Star, Angel Beats!, K-On!, Azumanga Daioh, Pokémon, Sword Art Online, The Haruhi Suzumiya series, and Avatar/Legend of Korra. Other than those, you'll have to ask, because chances are I haven't seen them yet and won't be as effective an editor, especially with characterization.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
No yaoi, please. I don't have any problem with two men being together, but it's really not something I enjoy reading or editing. I don't have too much of a problem with hardcore "M" rated stuff, as long as it's yuri or hetero and isn't overly vulgar. Blatant vulgarity itself isn't really my style either. A few curse words here or there? No problem. One every sentence or two? Too much. I'm also not a huge fan of the horror/thriller/angst/sadness genres. I'm usually an upbeat romantic, and that's where my editing will be strongest. Anyway, thanks so much for checking me out, and I hope we can work together!
