Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hi there! I'm Akirys. I've been a member of FFnet for four years and counting now. I've written several stories, and I'll be the first to admit that not all of them are good, but I do think that I've improved over time. And I hope to improve even more, what with the projects I've planned for the future! My betareading style is potentially very nitpicky. I look at grammar first before any revisions for the story itself, so I will definitely point out any glaring or reoccurring flaws. I'm not that great at dispensing criticism, though. I'm too shy! I'm quick to praise, but don't be afraid to press me over telling you that your story was written during a drunken rage and needs immediate attention. If you want me to look over some of your writing, contact me! Worst case scenario is it'll takes me anywhere from a few hours to a few days to respond! I don't have many expectations (besides being patient), but I do request that you have an understanding of how grammar works, or at least be willing to look up some articles on how commas work if your story is a complete wreck in that regard.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have a very clear understanding of what makes a story good or bad. If you have faulty grammar or characters, or an over-reliance on cliches, I'll be able to point them out to you. Sites like TV Tropes have really helped to hone my skills when it comes to predicting plot twists or understanding character archetypes. I'm also attuned to the side of writing that deals with sentence structure, proper punctuation, word flow - all those unfun inherent skills that can only make a story better. Overall, my two main strengths are grammar and characters. I'm a really good speller too, and that's enough of a pet peeve of mine that pointing out misspellings will be at the top of my list. I blame all of this on the amount of reading I did as a kid. I've got it memorized and I'm not afraid to bring it up! As for the latter: honestly, creating well-developed or original characters is just a passion of mine. I *will* help you with character development. It's a must!
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Pure criticism. It makes me feel guilty and bad no matter how necessary it is. I'll have a lot of trouble with your story if it's very poorly written, because I'll probably be feeling overwhelmed with finding ways to dance around outright admitting that the story is going to have to be rewritten entirely or is just plain not a good idea. I'll never forget to boost your confidence with praise, though, so I guess that's a plus? After being a beta reader for a little while, I have to mention that I'll sound kind of brusque if there's lots of errors to notify you of. I'm not mad, I promise! I just have to write down the mistakes as efficiently as possible! I'm not so good with story ideas in that it's hard for me to come up with ways to add plot or fill in plot holes. If you have an already established story, I'll probably be all right with thinking up more ways to differentiate it or fill the inconsistencies in, but I might be limited in this regard. Sorry in advance! Finally, I have no idea how good I'll be with deadlines. School will be busy and I have a tendency to start neglecting projects. This happens all the time with my own work, though I'm a lot more responsible when I'm dealing with other people's; still, apologies if replies slow down a little after a few weeks.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I feel like I'd be best with short stories or oneshots. I haven't done many official beta projects on this site yet or officially seen and critiqued a long story all the way through, so it'd be best if the story was on the shorter side! But if you have a whole novella that you'd like me to take a look at, try asking anyways! I think working on a long-term project with somebody would be a lot of fun! Genres: fantasy and adventure. I like magical powers and fascinating situations. Creativity is key! I also like those sorts of stories that deal with ghosts and the afterlife...that's a bit more of a specific category, but hey, maybe readers of this page can direct me to some good stories on those topics? Worth a try! I like crossover stories too.
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Romance. Fluff is doable, but not the most interesting of topics to me. I'll have trouble focusing my attention on those stories. Lemons are a definite no because I'm not ready to have that on my track record o~0 There are also crack stories, which I doubt I'll be able to do because, put simply, I'm not a very funny person. I won't be able to do stories based on randomness. Crack doesn't strike me as something that wants or needs a lot of nitpicking, though.
