|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've been exhaustively trained in the English language at two major universities, and was a good enough liar (I mean storyteller) to get them to train me for free. I can definitely improve spelling, grammar, plot structure and flow, assuming they need it. In fan bases in which I have experience, I can also help with characterization and internal consistency. I'm also not squeamish about sex, violence or other content-specific material; I'll read anything and give it a fair shot. br /
To get an idea for the sort of people I like to beta for, I'll (first) give you an example of the person I encounter all to often: the writer that dumps their work on me and says, "Fix it." That's too general. I need guidelines. What, specifically, do you want me to focus on in the beta read? I'll probably fix grammar and spelling automatically, but in my experience issues regarding stories are usually more global than that. Is there a scene you think isn't working? Tell me, and I'll give you my opinion and a few ideas to make it better. The key is specificity.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am a grammar Nazi and follow the Elements of Style handbook to the letter. I'm meticulous, thorough, and tireless as a reader. I'm also not easily shocked. I'll read practically anything, content-wise, in which I have experience or familiarity.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My schedule is hectic. When requesting a beta read, make sure you include a few possible deadlines. Anything under 5,000 words shouldn't pose too big of a problem, but I do work full-time and take care of others in my household, so I can't be on call 24/7. Sorry. Longer works aren't out of the question, but I'll need more time to look them over.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I love humor and adventure stories. Romance, when written well, is a pleasure, but (again, in my experience) it's usually written poorly. I throw out any story that has the characters refer to one another in lame, non-canon endearments. You are warned! I'm not pairing specific per se, but my preference is typically for heterosexual pairings.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Please don't send me f/f slash (unless you are Thamiris. But if you are Thamiris, you should not be sending me things, since you are dead). While I don't mind sex, PWPs are distasteful to me. Locate your sex scene in a story with a plot, and I'll read it happily. m/m slash for the fandoms I have experiences in is okay, though I reserve the right to review it on a case-by-case basis. Also, please don't send me stories that are outside my fandom areas (Xena, Hercules, Young Hercules, Zelda, Supernatural, and Robin Hood BBC). Thanks!
