Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hi, there! I'm lilwoodb, and I'm new to beta-reading but definitely not proofreading. I proofread my friend's projects all the time, so I know how this works. Basically I go through a document and fix basic grammar errors, then I go back and rearrange words/sentences so they flow and make sense, then I will go back again to look for plot errors and either fix them or point them out. I do not expect every single edit I make and/or suggest to be used, but I do expect you to accept and appreciate them as constructive criticism. Know that even though I can sometimes come across as harsh, I'm not trying to be that way and I only mean it in your best interest.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm the best at spelling, grammar, and flow. I'm also really good at dialogue and setting description. One of my pet peeves is repetitiveness (especially since I do it all the time in my own writing lol), so I'm really good at pointing it out and finding synonyms or alternate words/phrases that still make sense. I can also come up with good plot ideas that fit the story if you want me to, though don't rely on me to create your story.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Sometimes I do tend to overedit, which is why I understand that not every edit I suggest has to be used. As you've probably seen on this profile, I can overuse parentheses and slashes a bit as well, but I stay away from them when looking at dialogue. I also tend to like what are called periods, which do NOT refer to the ending punctuation of a sentence, but rather refer to really long but still grammatically correct (so not a run-on) sentences - kind of like this one here. ;) I also skip around a lot when I read, so there might be some small sections every now and then that I forget to edit. And like I said before, I can come across as harsh with my suggestions, even though I don't mean it. I don't have the greatest social skills in the world, not even on the Internet, but I try my best and I have your interests at heart. :) Finally, be mindful that I am an honors student and I'm very busy during both the school year and summer. So it may take awhile for me to beta your fanfic, but I promise I'll be thorough.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Well, I'll pretty much beta anything, so I don't really have any *preferences*, per se. I mean, I guess I'd rather beta from a category that I'm familiar with, so I know what I'm doing. But other than that, it might be more accurate to say what I DON'T MIND reading. I don't mind violence or romance as long as it's reasonably or contextually appropriate. I do love cute romances (either straight or LGBT, I'm not homophobic in the least), adventure, humor, suspense, and hurt/comfort, so I don't mind doing any of those. But really, any genre is okay with me as long as it's not /br /br /

One thing you might want to note is that I'm really big on canonical writing. If you look at my fanfics, I try to back up every single one of them with evidence from the original book/movie/etc. So try to give me a fanfic that's at least somewhat canonical. :)

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Anything rated M or higher. I don't mind language, but I get really uncomfortable with graphic violence and graphic sexual themes. (If you want to torture me, make me read the first chapter of "Lucky" by Alice Sebold. That should give you an idea of what I won't do.) These include dismemberment/cauterization, cannibalism, incest, and rape. Also, if you want me to beta for a childrens' book/movie/etc. fanfic, please nothing heavily romantic. I consider child romance wrong and disturbing, unless it's completely innocent and adorably funny (like elementary school 'crushes' - I don't mind those and I even wrote a couple stories like that). Finally, I tend to not read *ultra*-noncanonical ships UNLESS you can find evidence in the original book/movie/etc. to support your pairing. So basically, if you're trying to be disturbing with your stories or *completely* noncanonical, I won't betaread them. Call me innocent/naive/whatever, but that's how I am.
