Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Cody, here. Reading and writing are my passions, and so I take a great deal of consideration when I'm given something to beta-read. I value constructive criticism and I try to give that to others when I review their works; I analyze things carefully, making sure that what I'm given is not only what the original author intended but also edited/revised properly for everyone's enjoyment and understanding. If what you feel may not be constructive criticism, please tell me. I re-read and edit over things multiple times to ensure what’s been written makes sense and sounds right. I typically take paragraphs at a time, digesting each one and keeping track of what occurs in order to make the flow of the chapter/story/plot. When I’m given something to beta-read, I ask that you give me whatever necessary information will be needed for that chapter so I understand everything best. That way the work comes out the way the requester intended/wanted. I also ask that whoever requests me to beta-read to be a balance of patient and persistent. I’m a college student with other real world activities and happenings, so I might not be able to read something right away; I will get to it but you may have to wait a little while (patient) but don’t be afraid to check up on me once and a while to see how things are coming along (persistent).
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
One of my nicknames is 'The Grammar Queen.' When I write and beta-review, one of the key things I look for is grammar, spelling, and punctuation as well as sentence variation and word choice. If someone can't understand what you're writing because of a spelling error or your sentences are too long/short or that you lack some detail, then there's a problem - and I hope that I can help be your solution. I'm also very good at providing description and imagery for writing, which can help with transition, introduction, etc., with scenes and characters and the like.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
One of my weaknesses tends to be in sentence variation; I have my own problems as well, remembering and recognizing a good place to stop with a sentence and when to compliment the writing with a singular sentence. Sometimes I can get a little distracted with an outline, not wanting to initially follow what is planned, but I do end up circling back to the original when what I want doesn't work out.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I have a pretty much open mind when it comes to someone else's writing, and that also applies to the topic and genre. I myself enjoy yaoi/slash works with the occasional yuri/femslash, so I'm also willing to read any of those. My home lies in Bleach, as I'm very familiar with all the characters. I will read anything from that universe. My favorite pairings are GrimmIchi, RenIchi, Hichi(Shiro)Ichi, and AizenIchi, but as I said I'll pretty much read anything. I'm also familiar with (but not as much) Attack on Titan, Blue Exorcist, and Tiger & Bunny as far as anime goes. Books I'm familiar with are The Mortal Instruments (and corresponding series). The best way to find out if I'll read something is to PM me with your questions.
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
As I said the best way to find out if there's something I wouldn't read is to PM with your questions and information. I'm alright with AUs and OOCness as long as it's reasonable. I like how writer's incorporate different patterns of speech, for example with Hichigo(Shiro), but if it gets to the point where I can't decipher or understand what's being said, then there's no point for me to continue. Too much of an accent is too much. I also don't like when certain characters are completely down-played and made into useless figures (it's the best way I can put it). Again, with Shiro, he's not a mindless beast; sure he can be cruel and cunning, but he's smart, adaptable, and analyzing. That's what makes him a key player.
