|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm a fast reader, VERY picky about the quality of the fanfiction I read, also very picky about the moral content of anything I read. I don't insist that every character behave like a Sunday school teacher (besides, I don't admire all the ones I've met). I do insist on not beta-ing anything that flies in the face of my values. If you're pushing abortion, so-called assisted suicide, premarital sex, or slash, I do not want to beta your ficton. If we're talking fighting trees, flying squirrels, or falling words, we're all fine. I also won't beta it if it's just plain stupid. Romance fics all too often fall under this section.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have a good feel for characters I'm familiar with, so I can spot out of character behavior. That's not to say everyone has to see these characters exactly the way I do before I'll beta for them; there is a certain amount of 'flex' in any character depending on who writes them. However, if you're submitting a fic on how Arrietty turns into a madwoman and murders Human Beans in their beds (starting with Sho), I'll point you to a loony bin and throw your so-called story in the trash. You can always check a couple of my shorter stories if you want a look at my style to see if it is a good match for beta-ing yours. I'm a fairly good speller (and very handy with OneLook, which makes up for any shortcomings) and have a good sense of grammar, though I can't diagram a sentence. I just know when it sounds wrong.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am very anxious not to hurt people's feelings. I may have trouble being completely honest with you if I sense that you are already deeply invested in your fic and whatever critique I might offer (especially the sometimes necessary "This is awful! Start over!") will make you upset. Please specify what level of critique you prefer. I try not to ever be harsh, though; I am not asking for a license to bash. I'm also not excessively technical or math-oriented, though I am willing to learn, so if your story depends heavily on being technologically correct in any way, I might not be your best bet. For this reason I am cautious about reading or beta-ing sci fi and certain fantasy genres (plus, honestly, much of it is too weird for my tastes).
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
General rating preference is T and under. I prefer to beta stories in fandoms I know something about. I don't see how else I can give decent feedback on such vital aspects as character consistency. For a list, check the categories I've submitted to. It's not exhaustive, and you can always ask. Alternative Reality/Universe (AU) stories are fine so long as they're marked as such and not just blatant twistings of the canon; I think AU offers a lot of interesting possibilities and room to play.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'm not interested in beta-ing anything that flies in the face of basic Judeo-Christian values. You like it, find someone else who does to beta it. Specifically, please do not send me slash stories in ANY way, shape or form. If the characters are that way in the canon, I'm probably not into that fandom. No stories with major character deaths, unless you have a very good reason for the death ("Because I want to set up an alternate pairing!" does NOT count). I'm also very hesitant to beta romance stories since so many of them are horrific examples of female stupidity and neediness. If the plot boils down to "I need you! I'm desperate! I'll do anything to sleep with you!" then... don't send it to me. I don't mean to exclude stories that might include a needy character or two (how could we have any drama without them?) so long as they don't run the whole wretched show. Please no horror, character abuse, character fudge, excessive violence, or depressing endings. I have enough depressing endings in real life. (Don't we all?) Stories should be something that uplift us, at least most of the time. Along those lines, I'm not into satire or excessive sarcasm. It's not hard to make fun of people. Playground bullies do it all the time. I don't have to beta it. If a story has sloppy grammar, really bad spelling, all caps, all italics, all bolds, complete lack of attention to punctuation, etc... I won't beta it, nor will I offer to clean it up for you. If you want me to try, you need to show that you're at least trying too. Any questions, just ask!
