|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I absolutely love stories of all types, and I enjoy helping anyone with a true passion for writing to improve and succeed. In anything that I read, including my own work, I'm always looking to find or improve on several things: plot flow, the purpose or intention of events, character development, spelling, and grammar. If any of those sound like areas in which you would like a second opinion, I would be glad to help. If there is only one particular aspect you would like me to focus on, I will certainly comply, though I may offer other suggestions which you can take or leave as you will. I will commit to returning your work within a week of receiving it. During that time, I will read each piece a minimum of three times, though it'll likely be many more. I will go over it as many times as it takes. I can go over multiple drafts of the same piece if you'd like. I am also willing to beta stories with multiple chapters for grammar and spelling. If you'd like me to beta multiple chapters for other areas, such as plot, characters, and other content, I may ask that you provide an outline or summary of the entire story so that I can understand the direction you're going. It is not in my nature to be cruel, but I will give honest critiques. If you ask me to help you improve, then I may have to tell you things you don't want to hear, but I do so with the intention of helping you become a better writer, not to mock or bring you down. I will also point out areas in which you excel and are doing well, so that you can see a balance of your strengths and weaknesses as a writer. I may decline to beta your work, but I will give you a reason. It may simply because I am too unfamiliar with the source story and therefore will not be able to provide much insight, time constraints or personal preferences that are not listed below. No matter the reason, please respect my decision. I have a separate email account that I can use for communicating with others that I've met online, and will give it out upon request. I will work with the website's DocX program, but I'm a bit old school. I actually prefer to able to print out the story so that I can circle and highlight areas, and then scan and return it. However, I will work with whatever format you, the writer, would prefer.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am not infallible, but I do hold myself to a high standard of grammar and spelling, and will do that same for any work that I beta. By the time I finish reading your work, common mistakes and typos will be at a minimum or nonexistent. Character development and growth is essential for me. If I am familiar with the original work from which your fanfiction originates, I will be able to point out areas that don't fit the personality of the characters. The obvious exception is when the events of the story change, alter, or grow the character. Finally, I feel that I am fully capable of assisting with plot holes or unnecessary events. I believe that there must be a purpose to the inclusion of any event or fact, so I can help you find and cut those little tidbits that serve no purpose if that is your wish.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I sometimes have a difficult time recognizing melodrama, so you'll probably find that in my work, and I'll likely miss it in yours. It's quite common for me to overuse adverbs as well, though I am working hard to improve on it. I'm also learning how to better "show" and not "tell", so it's possible that I may fall a little short in that area when I review your work.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
If you're looking for a beta to help with story development and content, then I would prefer to work with stories that I'm familiar with. I did not list everything in profile, so I will let you know when you contact me if I am qualified to review it. If you only need me to edit for grammar and spelling, then I'm happy to read anything.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
The only three major things I refuse to read is smut with no purpose, romance stories involving incest (as in trying to pass off rape or incest as true love or romance), and stories that bash any and all religions. I'm not saying don't include smut or sex scenes, but I believe that it should have a natural place in the story, and not thrown in just for the sake of having it there. The others are simply my preferences, so please respect them.
