|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hello dear, I am really glad you want me as your beta reader :) You can call me Rainbow. I am a 17 year old High School student and I am here mostly because I want to improve my English skills. I am from Austria, so my native language is German. English is my second language, and since I want to go to Canada after school I seize every opportunity I get to learn more about this beautiful language, and I think this is a fairly good one. I know that some people find that hard to do, but I always try to see Grammar&Spelling and the actual plot of a story as two different things. In my opinion, good knowledge of grammar does not automatically equal being a good writer, and vice versa. You want me to be your beta reader? Great, I'd be honoured! But there are some things I want you to know. As I said, I am a student. Sometimes that's very stressful, especially in January and May. Because that's when everybody is trying hard to improve their grades, including me. So please be gentle with me if I'm a little slow. That might also be because I always try to consider every aspect of a story and since I also want you to be able to follow me, it might take me a while to write down my thoughts so you know what I actually want to say. Also, I try not to sugarcoat things too much, because I sometimes tend to do that. Believe me, it may sound nicer, but it doesn't help you as much as telling things straight. If I have something to criticize, I will tell you clearly. I don't really except anything from you if you want me to be your Beta Reader. You want help, and I want to help. It's simple, really. Just message me. :) Yours truly, RainbowLightsaber
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Even though English is not my native language (or maybe especially because of that), I am very good at spelling. Misspelled words are practically beckoning me to correct them as soon as I see them, and believe me, I will find them. Also, I am very sensitive to the difference between their/there/they're and your/you're. I can't even say how often we had to endure endless lectures about the differences between them in class. Another strengh of mine is listing everything, and I really mean every little thing, that went through my head while reading. I like writing and receiving very detailed reviews. The more somebody says about what you wrote, the more potential for improval you might see. And another thing: characterisation. I am well aware of the fact that certain characters are very difficult to write and that fans argue over certain character traits sometimes. And still, there are some things you can't argue about. Accurate characterisation is important. Reading the characters acting completely out of character makes me and a lot of other people cringe, so I will try to give you a few tips.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My biggest weakness is finding errors in complex grammatical constructions. This is a problem I come across quite often when writing something. A lot of the phrases I'd like to use can't just be translated from German into English, and since my English teacher has grown tired of answering all of my random questions, this is a major problem for me. Also, I don't trust translation programms like Google Translate or Pons. The next point could actually be both a strengh and a weakness, but I'm gonna put it here: As I said already, if I have something important to say, especially if I didn't like something, I won't sugarcoat it. Not even a little bit. I have been told that I can be quite harsh sometimes, and if my choice of words upsets you, I'm sorry.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I will read just about every type of story, but I do have a preference for fluffy romantic comedy. I don't have a problem with things like violence, character death, Alternative Universes, Gender Swap, sexual content or anything else that might me a touchy subject for some people. I am open for everything.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'm sure most of you have heard of that terrible fic called "My Immortal". Yeah, well... enough said. If your story has something in common with it, my criticism won't make you happy. Another thing that makes me cringe are Mary Sue OCs. Seriously, nobody's perfect, so if there's an OC in your story, he or she should be realistic and fitting for the fandom. Other than that, I'm really fine with everything.
