|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm taking a chance, here, in an effort to try to improve the writing I see, and give support to fledgling muses who just need some feedback. Usually I have a hard time reading incomplete stories. DO NOT ask me to read a story that you aren't willing to finish. You start with me, you will be finishing the story. I've been burned badly by stories that were wonderful, the the writer pulled them off and left off writing. It infuriates me. I understand real life, and I don't mind it taking a while to complete a story, but you WILL complete it if you want me as a beta reader. If your creative juices dry up, I'll try to offer suggestions. If you write yourself into a corner, hopefully I can sounding board you out of it.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am strong on the emotions and relationships, and I tend to catch most grammatical errors because they break the flow of the story. I also know a good bit of the canon inside out, and I'm a strong researcher. Mentioning something that violates the timeline of a given story or doesn't make sense tends to show up on my radar. I'll do the research if I can and give you my findings.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
One of my flaws is that if a story is not very strongly written or is progressing extremely slowly, I tend to skim it. However, as a beta reader rather than a general reader, I would take care to avoid this as much as possible. I'd probably call you on the slowness. However, in the spirit of full disclosure, this has to be known. I also will have to strive to maintain the balance between constructive criticism and soft-petaling. You'll need at least a medium-thick skin to work with me.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Strong friendships, strong relationships, and otherwise stories that are as character-driven as action. I like a good suspense, drama, hurt/comfort setup. My humor is reasonably dry, and I prefer that. A good example of the kind of humor I like is from Peter David's Q-in-law - Picard asks what they are going to do now that Mrs. Troi has the Q powers and it essentially tossing Q up one bulkhead and down the deck. Worf, being no fan of Q, suggests they sell tickets. Long stories are cool with me. I prefer over 5,000 words. I prefer to read stuff that is just shy of violating canon, but the best ones are the undercurrents that could very well be canon if TPTB had seen fit to do so.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I don't like reading stories that include romantic liaisons between members of the same sex, or graphic depictions of even consensual activities. Friendships, strong ones, yes, but when they cross that line, I will reject an otherwise wonderful story. I prefer a good bit of class when referring to romantic activities, and the humor should be clean. While I'm not a child, I don't enjoy stuff that I wouldn't let my mother read. I'm a bit harsh on out-of-character-ness unless the story is specified to be a part AU with OOC involved. I'm not a huge fan of it. Toeing that OOC line is acceptable, though.
