|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta reader, there are some things that I expect from a writer, especially if they are trying to post their work. For one thing, they have to have a good grasp on the English language. You may ask what that means, but if you read over your work and think to yourself whether or not your work has the English language down, then you don’t have it. But if you nodded as you read what I expected, then you know for sure that it won’t be a problem.
Another thing is to have good spelling and grammar. Now, I am not asking for perfection but simple words should be spelled correctly. This statement does in fact apply to their, they’re and there.
Last thing, if you are seriously going to post your work, then I would prefer that you didn’t give me a story that was entirely chat-speak or abbreviated just because you were too lazy to type out the entire name. Now, if it serves purpose in the story, like two characters are texting or something is abbreviated in the fandom, then that’s different.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I like to think that if I list a fandom under my beta preferences that I have either resources to find information or have seen it and understand it completely. So, should your story fall within one of those fandoms, you can be assured that you won’t have to worry about inaccurate information or fandom screw-ups. That aside, English is my first language and spelling isn’t an issue at all. If anything, I could just use spell-check.
Now, I can come to you both as a reader and a writer, since I do both on a daily basis. From these two perspectives, I can see what its like to view it firsthand as well as see what is underneath and find ways to bring it out a bit more.
I just have to request that if you are planning on discontinuing a story, contact me. Don’t let me sit at home, putting aside time for your story when you aren’t even going to finish it. To solve this, I would advise having at least two chapters already done, so you can send me a chapter while you take time off or work on another chapter.
Last things, I will not sugar-coat the truth. If your story is a bit random and I know it will definitely get flamed for either stupidity or clichéd reasons, I will tell you so we can both work on changing it. Should you want someone to give a thousand compliments and only one tweak, then I suggest you find someone else, because in reality, no story is so perfect that it can go without constructive criticism.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
If you look on my written stories, you can see that I have two that are unfinished. Well, I ran out of steam, lost interest, ended up mocking my own work or got hit with unbearable writer’s block. So definitely finishing stuff when pressured in writing is not something I can handle and I admit it.
So, if you want me as your beta, I have to insist that you not post your story until we are both at the end of your story, trying to wrap up. With this, you don’t have to worry about losing readers and I don’t have to worry about rushing to get your chapter back. Fanfiction.net is not my life and I am pretty sure it isn’t yours either.
While this may come off as a contradiction, if you tell me you need help with a scene, I can do a bang up job, but also, if you tell me what a scene is about, what you want happening and how you want to happen, I can as well do just as fine. Depending on how you want it, I can adapt, but sometimes, too much structure or too much freedom will have me turning away from your work.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I do in fact like a lot of different things when it comes to reading and writing, but all in all, I have to say I would prefer romance, specifically gay romance. I am not personally experienced in being homosexual, but I have read a lot of the books, watched a bunch of the movies and completely pro-gay. Now, by saying this, I am not saying that I hate hetero-fiction, but just that I prefer slash over it…by a lot. This statement applies to all type of gay pairing, no matter the age, gender, relationship, or anything of the such. I feel that if two people can be slashed, even by a thin thread, then by all means, it’s okay in my book.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I have a strict rule on rape fictions and unless it’s in the original fandom, completely canon, then I will not do it, at all. I do not mean to offend, but I find it un-necessary and completely…obscene to write it, especially if the victim is liking it. Mary Sues and Gary Stus will not be tolerated. Should you know that your character is a Mary Sue or Gary Stu and try to write it anyway, I will reject it. On the other hand, if you need help avoiding this horrible characterization, I will gladly lend my services to decrease the population of Sues and Stus. This statement applies to canon characters changed into being Sues and Stus.
I don’t like OOCness, so anything that has the characters freaking out and acting totally off the wall, I will not beta it-sorry. I am not a master sex guru, but I do read smut and whatnot, so I know what is hot and what is a complete turn-off. Also, I can provide input here and there; I just know that I can’t write it myself. So, it’s your call.
If you still want me as your beta, please PM me with a basic plot of your story and any other questions or information. Then we will go from there.
