Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta reader, I would like to help a story do its best at being the best story it can be. I only expect that someone would take my suggestions not as destructive, but as constructive criticism and that it might be useful to them. I never expect someone to agree with what I've beta-ed, but rather that they take what I've suggested into mind.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I find that I'm very good with creative writing. I have an edge for taking things further than the should be sometimes, which while my friend find torturous in my stories, I find it interesting working a character through its struggles. I like to play around with words and go through thesauruses occasionally due to the fact that using the same words over and over can get boring. I think I'm good with descriptive writing because I've learned (yes, learned) to type in detail a lot better than I used to. A lot of what goes into good books and stories, isn't so much the plot as much as the description. My 9th grade teacher told us all something I'll never forget to remember when I'm writing. "Don't tell me. Show me." I find that stories where you're 'told' about whats going on in a story is boring. Explore what you're writing and don't tell. Show. Its simple to write a page and a half story because you've told whats going on. Its the easy way out. But taking the time to write it out and describe. Show rather than tell. I've been told I'm a grammar freak. I know it. I correct people daily for saying a sentence the wrong way, and living with people who do it on a regular basis only strengthens the ability to catch the wrong type of grammar. I have a good eye for catching misspellings and grammatical errors.
I'm good with punctuation as well. I don't think there's one thing that urks me more than seeing a punctuation missing where it should be.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
As stated above, I find that I'm good with grammar and punctuation. I think the one weakness I seem to have is occasionally I will hit a rough spot with punctuation, not being exactly sure where a comma should be inserted. That, as well as coming to a sentence that really doesn't make sense. Trying to betaread should be something that gives the beta reader something to do, but also it shouldn't make it so that the reader has to fix 10,000 mistakes before returning the finished chapter to the writer.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I don't really have a preference, though I find that I'm very into angst and parody lately. On the side of that though, I have to admit that I do LOVE to read romances, humour, drama. I'm a sucker for stories that have those three involved. I definitely enjoy reading stories with those involved, and am always willing to help out as my friends would tell you.
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I don't really have a preference against stories. I'm willing to help, no matter what the cause or the story. I'm a helper. Let me. help you.
