|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta-reader, I want to promote and encourage my author's personal writing style. Although this is fanfiction, each author has his or her own voice and own view on situations. I believe that some of this should be transferred into the author's writing. However, because this *is* fanfiction, the author should balance that with the viewpoints and styles of the characters. I would like to help aspiring writers develop style, thorough characterization, themes, balance within stories, and grammatical points. I do not want to help authors with the plots of their stories, because to me, that seems a little to personal. I dislike spoilers (for anything), but love teaching and helping.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am very good at grammar, and know a few things when it comes to creating themes, developing metaphors, subtle foreshadowing, and BUILDING CHARACTERS. I think that characterization is key to writing, and I believe I am very good at it. However, I know that there are different ways to interpret different characters, and believe that that is one of the great things about fanfiction. I am not afraid to be wrong. Another of my strong points is that I can give constructive criticism without being mean and without flaming.
I am also fairly fluent in French, and I know some Japanese. Neither of these are my native language though. This means that I can usually be reasonably sure that you are grammatically (and in the case of Japanese, formality-wise) correct, though not much more.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am horrible at catching typos. I don't find them very important, because I don't catch them very well, and because I believe that typos are simple mistakes. My other weakness is that I tend to be on fanfiction.net fairly sporadically. This means that if you are type of person who updates daily, bi-weekly, or weekly, I am the wrong person to beta for you.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer longer stories compared to short ones, probably because that gives more time for character development. This does not mean that I will not accept one-shots and the like. But I will do any genre (that I feel I can handle). I also prefer an author who will engage in a dialogue with me. That way I can understand what you are thinking and why, and will be better able to help.
I also am an idealist, so I prefer happy endings.... *feels kind of like a dork*
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Mature (sex) scenes: Although I do read mature content, and have written it, I feel utterly embarrassed when I do read it. I usually end up skimming those scenes. I would be happy to beta any fanfiction that incorporates such a scene, but unless the author specifically asks me to beta the scene, there will be a lack of comments. Your thoughts/ideas of mature content is your business and my thoughts of your mature content is... awkward. And on that note, under no circumstances will I read incest (especially twincest, because I *am* a twin) or relationships that promote pedophilia (when the characters are over ~10 years apart in age).
Poetry: I really have no experience reviewing poetry, and would not even know where to start. I'm pretty much a prose person, unless you are writing an epic poem, in which case I would be interested.
