Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I spend a lot of time on ff.net reading and posting stories. I spend a lot of time rereading the stories I truly enjoy. My criterion for reading is this: it if isn’t well written, I cannot read it. You’re writing reflects how serious you are at being a writer; it reflects the passion you hold for the subject at hand. Within the first few paragraphs, it will either turn the reader for or against your story and on a whole, you as a writer. Some plots can be absolutely amazing but if there are so many spelling/grammar errors that the reader has to stop several times a paragraph and reread it until it makes sense, you will soon lose that reader.

When I beta for someone (which has only been friends of mine, until now), I look at the small details as well as the whole story. Spelling, grammar, plot, structure. It all matters, right down to the tiniest detail. I look at characters, scenes, and time line. Most of all, I like to make sure it makes sense. There’s nothing more frustrating than a chapter that you’re left thinking, “what the hell was that on about?”

My only expectation when requesting my services is that it needs to look like you’ve taken some effort into your work before I put my effort into beta-reading it. If it’s just thrown together and then sent on before you yourself has even bothered to proof read and edit it once, please don’t waste my time.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My strengths are story line, spelling, and over all “does it make sense?” I spend a lot of time looking at punctuation because it’s frustrating to know that a period is missing at the end of a sentence. Plot is not a huge deal in my opinion as long as the writing has a purpose. I look for the purpose. Don’t get me wrong, I love drabbles and minor fluff one-shots, but please don’t start me on a 40 chapter story of nothing but fluff. Plot is important and it’s what pulls the reader in.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My weakness is grammar. I don’t care much for the computer telling me it’s a fragment because that’s not the way we talk. I can spot a run on sentence and where a comma and/or period might need to be placed, but as far as where the strict rules of grammar are concerned, I don’t really pay a whole lot of attention. The story needs to be readable without the reader having to stop and backtrack to figure out what the writer is trying to say oppose to what is actually written. So if you’re looking for grammar perfection, I’m not who you’re looking for.

I'm also not huge on the ability to keep characters in character.

Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I’ll admit, I’m very biased. I have a very narrow field of interest and it is this: Harry Potter and Teen Titans for the most part. I might agree to read something out of those two fields but I might not understand things that would be implied in the original.

I prefer Raven/Robin and Draco/Ginny but I am not against reading something other than that.

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
