|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hi, I'm Sarah, and I am pleased to offer my services as an active beta-reader! I will always try my best to make a story as technically correct as it can be, while still having a strong respect and communication with the author. I do not mind being overwhelmed with large quantities of writing, as more often than not it inspires and motivates me to get more done. For this reason, I will always be available to beta as many stories as are offered to. When it comes to my actual beta-reading style, I'm rather nitpicky with technical errors, but I think that handling every story with care and respect is a number-one priority over all else. For example: "your" instead of "you're" used in a sentence. I'll point it out and suggest the author correct it, but I would never correct it myself without permission, mock the author for making a mistake, or act in a passive-aggressive fashion once I knew the author might have trouble with that particular phrase. Respect and human decency are very important to me in a beta. I'm also a pretty good friend, if I do say so myself :) I'm always there to offer advice, or just listen, even if your problem isn't related to the story or even to fiction at all. Everyone deserves to be listened to, and their opinions heard. Message me if you'd like to chat :D It's also telling me that I have to state my expectations for anyone that wishes to acquire my services. Well, that's simple. Respect my opinion, be kind, and keep in contact! That's it! I don't discriminate at all. Thanks for reading, and I hope we can work together in the future! Cheers, Sarah
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm best at correcting technical errors. Spelling, grammar and punctuation are three of my biggest strong points. I am also fairly good at story pacing and telling if a plot line is weak or busy, and offering suggestions on how that may be changed for the better. If I know the fictional universe and characters, I do have a very good memory and attention to universe-specific details. Also, in this case, I'm quite good at characterization.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My biggest weakness right now is the fact that I'm unable to correct and therefore beta for any language other than English. This is a sore spot for me and I will be learning other languages in the near future, but for right now, English is the only language I can communicate with you and beta your story. If I don't know the universe, I can help with technical errors, but not with plot, details or characterization. Ask me to find out if I know a certain one! Another thing is that I have an oddly formal writing style, as I'm sure you can see here. Oftentimes I will be beta reading someone else's story, and I'll make a few changes that the person has replied with "Sarah, that's how you write, not me". Please tell me to back off if that happens :)
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I would prefer stories with plot over stories without (e.g. oneshot fluff). I prefer longer stories for the challenge of it. I like reading a good romance, especially slow burn, but stories that are able to portray friendship in a healthy and non-sickly sweet way are my absolute favourites of all time. However, I'll read pretty much anything.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Smut. Anything over a T rating is not for me. I'm sorry, but if you're planning on having a sex scene in your story, I can't help you. I don't enjoy reading smut and it does make me uncomfortable to an extent. I also will absolutely not beta read a story featuring abuse, domestic violence, anything tragic happening to children, or a story centred around mental illness. The first three are squicks for me, and the last, I feel I would not represent properly as I don't have a mental illness. Other violence (e.g. apocalypse, robberies) are grey areas for me. Talk to me for specifics.
