Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
If I've bothered to read/review something, then I generally think it's worth my time and critique. I am critical. Exceedingly so. In matter of fact, the level of criticism I direct toward my own work first and foremost is the reason I never seem to finish anything, and why it took me so long to post anything on this site(I'm not satisfied with it - I only posted so I could beta-read for people). That said, I have never, to my memory, ever flamed something by saying 'it's stupid, for the love of all that's holy don't write anything else' - I rather say 'It's stupid - this is why it's stupid, kindly fix it. I'm waiting.'. If I bother to criticize, it's because I think the author is capable of doing better. Most of my reviews are either picking up problems, or 'I thought this bit was hilarious' etc.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am a grammar nazi. I will read almost anything - kindly make it worth my while. I can be pedantic, especially at picking apart thin plots and pushing someone to do better. I am a melting pot of many, many ideas. I like big words, I use big words, and I encourage people to expand their vocabulary. That said, you're not winning a prize for every word exceeding two syllables. I am not ashamed to research or use wikipedia. Oh, and I read fast, and I don't mean /

br /

I believe in quality fiction writing, including fan fiction. I say we up the bar.

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
See above re: Grammar NAZI and pedantic. I'm sure I can be annoying for some people. I will knock back beta requests due to things like crossovers, pairings that are utterly invisible(never going to happen) in canon material. I'm picky.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Short and sweet - if it's got twenty-odd chapters I am not likely to read it, as if I wanted to read a novel I would get one off a bookshelf. br /

br /

Decent humor will always go down /

br /

Bromance! Yay for stories where the guy helps the other guy get the girl, awesome adventures are had, with a side of male bonding and blowing stuff up!br /

br /

Unconventional romance - fiction where other interesting stuff is happening that happen to be kinda romantic(daaaaawww).br /

br /

If I know the fandom well enough to say either 'this is utterly out of character' or 'I could sooo see them doing that', I will give it a /

br /

Most anything that doesn't leave a sour taste in my mouth, or have me reaching for the brain bleach, I will at least attempt to read. Most people have the capacity to realize if their fiction is /

br /

Anything that does the characters and the universe they're in JUSTICE.

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
No crossovers! Unless it's in the same damn universe!br /

br /

Songfic! ARGH! Inspired by is fine, but half of the fic being the lyrics to some utterly ooc current pop song... /

br /

NO NON-CANON SLASH! If you want to throw an odd pairing at me, it had better be CONVINCING!br /

br /

Actually, any fiction that throws any characters that have no apparent in-canon chemistry - sexual or otherwise - into sexual situations for the titillation of author and/or /

br /

PWP - unless it's showing some kind of different spin or new insight on an established /

br /

Illicit tales of lust and fornication written by anyone under the age of 18. I still may yet put that limit back up to '30 years or older with a couple of kids and some life experience' - bearing in mind I'm under the age of 30 myself. If you can't at least imagine yourself in that position, or have had some experience of similar situations...just don't write it. If you can't take the time to do the research - even talking to people who have been in similar sexual situations to the ones you want to write - why should I bother reading it?br /

br /

I'll read M/R ratings etc...I get tired of them more often than not - why make it so explicit when it's not needed to advance the plot and/or doesn't really fit the fandom? This is not to say that sex, for example, can not be used to advance a plot - so far I know of one original fiction writer who can do that consistently. Sometimes you'll find pieces that have been rated higher to be on the safe side - often shows the author cares a bit more about what they're doing. Those I /

br /

Crack!fic - especially the ones that don't come with the warning - ie they didn't realize how damn cracky it actually /

br /

Really Long Fiction - if I wanted to read something so very, very long and complex, I would read actual hardcopy novels - they've at least already been edited. If you want help with a long one, it'd better be /

br /

Pointless Angst. Woobiefication of characters that did nothing to deserve it. The sort of rubbish h/c that has otherwise stoic characters breaking down leading to plotless, over-emotional drivel...and I could keep going but I think I made my /

br /

Harry Potter fanfiction - I read the books, and I saw the movies cause they're a shiny, shiny lark, but I will not read the fanfiction. I really don't like the series' protagonist - he's a whiny git with awesome /

br /

I won't beta-read for anyone that doesn't BLOODY SPELLCHECK! Or uses american spelling/pronunciation for fanfiction set in the UK/Australia etc. Actually, I find US spelling of certain words irritating(for myself) and confusing(for anyone that's trying to learn English, it's hard enough as is) - but that's a personal quirk rather than a 'I refuse to read it' /

br /

Fiddly text tricks for breaking up of paragraphs - they irk me.
