|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'll review pretty much any story with whose source material I'm familiar. First thing to know is that I'm not always a nice reviewer; I'll tell you up-front if I think your story needs work, and what areas need the most fixing. That said, I'm happy to help either as an editor or as a brainstorming partner if the need arises. I won't always have a lot of time, as my life can get kind of hectic, so I may have to request patience on your /br /
br /br /
Similar to how the best English teacher I ever have used to handle written works he received, I'll generally tell you more of what you're doing wrong than what you're doing right. If I don't comment on something, it's usually because it's good enough for me. Because of that, I guess you could call me a bad cop reviewer.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have a pretty sharp eye for awkward wording and inorganic character moments. If something just feels 'wrong' to most people, I'm usually able to point to what it is specifically that isn't working. I'm not shy about telling you what you need to fix, so if like me you have trouble finding someone who will actually point out the things you can improve on, then look no further.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
If I come to the point where I think a story is just not interesting or engaging because of the abundance of flaws, or if I don't really dig the premise in the first place for one reason or another, I'm not very good at feigning interest. As a result, my reviewing suffers, and more often than not I find I want to just drop a story. Though of course I will do my best not to do that if someone asks me to look over their stuff, I can't say with certainly that it won't happen.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I like adventure stories, particularly with relatively fast-paced plotlines. I'm also a sucker for a good romance, but it takes some work to make a romance good in my opinion. I'd love to read a good horror fic, but I've never really seen one. Basically, as long as it's a story that's going somewhere, then I'm happy with it.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Stories that rely too much on introspection often can't hold my attention for long. I get plenty of that in the assigned readings I have for my classes. Of course, there are exceptions, especially if the characters are some sort of Machiavellian schemer or something, but not many introspective stories manage to be as interesting as, say, Death Note. In short, a story that isn't going anywhere isn't going to float my boat.
