|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta reader I am... thorough! I will be there obsessing over the minute details until 3am. If you like that kind of freakish intensity, then look no further! I like to fall in love with a story and be as hooked on it as the readers will be.
Being honest; I expect fic to have a good premise, promising plot and some character development. It's fine to come to me with just the bare bones, or something that needs very little polishing. I'm quite happy to work either way, and I love to bounce ideas back and forth. If you just need some spelling and grammar reviewed, or you want a sounding board for the whole storyline, I'm flexible.
I'm quite a fan of AU so don't hesitate to bring that to the table.
My style varies according to the author's preference; I can just make footnotes on grammar and spelling, or I can offer up some ideas as far as plot goes. You'll find that I won't be able to keep quiet when it comes to characterisation, so if it doesn't feel right to me, I'll be letting you know. Basically, I'll be as invasive or restrained as you like.
Generally I send back fic as a Word file, with the words or sentences I have edited highlighted in red. I'll add in-text notes like this: (** insert text here) also highlighted in red. If there's another system you prefer, I can work with that too.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I've been doing this for quite a while, and I have very high standards, so expect me to take time with your fic and offer the best opinion I can. I will always be honest.
I'm brutal when it comes to characterisation. Once I know a fandom well, and have a feel for the characters, I can't take anything that goes even a step out of character. If you enjoy writing fics where the characters are just of your own creation, with the book/show character's names tacked on, then go write and be happy, but don't ask me to beta. Even if you've just asked me to grammar scheck, I won't be able to resist pointing out bad characterisation. I'm sorry but it kills me.
I work quite well with AU and am pretty adaptable when to comes to new characters/environments.
I'll say it straight out; I have a very high standard of English. If you are going to use absurd colloquialisms outside of character dialogue and want them to stay in your text, then warn me in advance. If your grammar is so unbearable that I simply can't go on, then I'm sorry but it's likely that I'll quit, no matter how much I am enjoying the story.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Time is my enemy more often than not. While I only offer to beta during the summer when I am not at college, I may have busy days every now and again. I will always warn you when I am going to be away from the internet for a while.
Commas... I add them too often.. it's a disease I've never been able to overcome!
I'm terrible at reading for some non-canon ships; purely because I can't imagine them as being in-character and therefore can't process it.
The fanfiction that I have posted to this site is years old and positively dire. The only reason I haven't removed it is purely in virtue of the amount of time that I spent on each one. I lost all of my recent writing when my heard drive went kaboom last year, so I am slightly paranoid about keeping writing only in one place. I assure you that my writing standard has improved since then, and I always made a better beta than author.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I enoy canon fic, especially vignettes that fit between scenes or episodes.
However, I also love AU fic, so it's all a good mix really.
Ship is nice, but certainly not necessary.
If you're going to do a character death, do it well and I will love you.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'm not discriminating here, but I can't read for most slash*/non-canon ships at all. It's simply because I can't imagine them being in character. I have read one or two non-canon ships that have worked, so if you think that the characters have really and truly maintained their integrity, then I'll certainly give it a try.
*If, by the time you read this, I have added a fandom that does include a canon slash pairing, then by all means send it on.
