Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am currently attending the University of Washington Tacoma. I have taken and passed extensive courses in English concerning fiction writing, and basic to moderate English use.

My beta style is rather advanced and brutal. I am less concerned with punctuation and grammar mistakes (although I WILL point those out and correct them) than I am with the overall story and sentence structure. If the person whose story I'm doing beta for does not have an outline, I make suggestions and advise subtle shifts to his or her plot to set themselves up for something more dramatic in the future. If the person already knows where his or her story is going, then I tend to focus more on character consistency, interactions, and the aforementioned grammar and spelling.

I am also an accredited beta reader at Perfect Imagination, meaning I've taken and passed their beta reading test. My score was eighty-two percent, but in my defense, most of the errors they had in the test piece were grammatical mistakes, which I stated earlier as not being one of my strong points.

If anyone wishes to acquire my service, then I only have one requirement. You must use proper formatting. This means, no walls of text, starting a new paragraph every time someone new is talking, and knowing how to use block formatting. Other than that, I am willing to take just about anything.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I excel at many things. I have an eye for quality and a nose for things that tend to drag a story down. I make sure to read any story I'm beta-reading out loud so I can spot redundancy and find sentences that don't tend to flow together. I'm a real stickler for characterization so I'm incredibly good at finding inconsistencies. I may not bet the best in the world but I pride myself on being pretty damn good.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
A story may be at the height of perfection but if I'm reading something I inherently don't like then I tend to be a harsher critic. For instance, I don't like reading tragedy and dark fics with no happy ending. I don't read stories to get depressed. If you're desperate for help though, I'm not going to deny you. I like helping authors and I'll happily beta anything...except for the one exception I have listed in the "Not My Cup Of Tea" area.

I also have a long turnaround date. A single four-thousand word chapter can take me anywhere from 2 to 7 days.

Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
No particular preferences. There are some stories I enjoy more than others but I don't think that's relevant to my skills as a beta-reader. My first and foremost goal is to help other authors. My preferences come second.

On the other hand, I would prefer that you do the following things to your chapter before you send them to me. This isn't a requirement, but rather good writing practice that will make the experience more enjoyable for you, and easier for me.

1) Run a spell check. I really shouldn't have to say this but you'd be surprised how many people still do not do this.

2) Read your story out loud to yourself. It works wonders, and you'll spot several mistakes you otherwise would have made. I'm going to read it out loud anyways, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't.

3) Before writing your story, make an outline. If not for your entire story, then at least for the chapter you're working on. It will help you focus your story and might help you from getting sidetracked.

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Under no circumstances will I deal with Yaoi or Yuri fics. No, I don't have anything against gays or lesbians but I can't stand to see my favorite anime and video game characters get portrayed in this manner when all evidence is to the contrary (unless of course these characters are inherently written as being gay or lesbian, then I'm perfectly okay with that). If you simply have a pair of characters in the background that are characterized as gay but you KEEP them in the background, then that is fine as well.

Finally, I will not beta-read poetry or drabbles. I honestly think its pointless since poetry is a matter of taste and style, and drabbles are simply vague artistic expressions that don't require real heavy beta work like I offer.
