|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I consider myself a beta. Not a proofreader or spellchecker. I want to be given something that you consider finished to the best of your ability. Something which would not look out of place here if you posted it un-beta-read.
My style is to read a completed story (or selfcontained chunk of story) and send it back with comments on it after each paragraph. I don't edit directly - not even spelling. You won't be posting what I send back to you, you'll be going back to the version you sent me and making your own changes.
I'm an older fanfic writer. In fact, I'll be honest. I'm 38 years old, I've been to university, I'm married, I've been writing for nearly 30 years, and I have two children old enough to write fanfiction of their own. I have plenty of life experience, I've read vast swathes of books and watched vast numbers of TV shows on all sorts of subjects, and I'm very much into doing research. That doesn't mean I expect every fact in a story to be right in the real world, but I won't get on well betaing for you if you use real things in your story, but get them wrong, or blithely ignore a basic solution to a plot device problem which your characters would know about.
I don't consider myself a writing expert (I have no creative writing education whatsoever) or a big name fan (I've only been involved in internet fandom for 3 years). I'm just a fellow author who'd like to share what I've learnt over the years, and a reader who enjoys in-character and well-presented stories.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm good at technical things - grammar and typos, punctuation. Note that I'm British - I'm happy to read fics written in American ( :) ) but bear in mind that I may not pick up awkwardnesses in style in that case.
In RL I'm a scientist and computer programmer, so I'm good at pseudoscience which doesn't cause readers to roll round the floor in hysterics :)
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I tend to be a nitpicker, and sometimes can't see the wood for the trees. I'm most unlikely to spot that your story would have a better structure if you reversed the order of the first two chapters, for instance.
Again, American culture. I'll simply presume that your description of how college application works is correct, for instance.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I love mission-fic! Much prefer stories where the canon characters are doing the sort of things they do in canon.
I also love crossovers. PM me to ask if you have one with one of my specified fandoms, because there are plenty of fandoms I don't consider myself "part of" but I am familiar with the source material. I'm happy with AU and OCs as long as they have the feel of the original canon.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
If you feel the need to list a pairing up front, I probably won't like it. Romance in the context of a story is fine - but it better be explained and plausible in the fic itself. Telling me that's what it is does not count.
Character bashing? No thanks. You may not like a certain character in your fandom, but if the other characters do, then I want to see them portrayed that way.
