|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm an undergrad writing major with a deep passion for philosophy. My big theme is Identity. I am reserved, have three tattoos, and don't partake in normal college activities. But that's enough about me.
Writing good fanfiction and writing good fiction truly differ in a lot of ways, and although it's alot of fun writing fanfiction and an excellent way to begin your career, you have to get over some conventions that you've read in books you've gotten in libraries and bookstores. I encourage anyone who wants to write fanfiction to not only read a lot of books and short stories, but to read loads and loads of fanfiction also.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I tend to be really good at bringing out *idea* in a story, but I know that a lot of people aren't really looking for that in a betareader. If you are, come at me. I'm pretty honest about everything that needs fixing, but reasonably gentle. I'm not going to rip your work apart. I read a lot: in the words of David Foster Wallace "I devour libraries."
Also, I know a thing or two about fanfiction and its conventions as a genre through what I've seen in my years here. I can recommend pieces to read within my own fandom that might help your growth as a writer. I'm also relatively easy to communicate with - I have very flexible schedules and as long as you keep me in the loop with when you want something done by, I should be able to do it by then.
Also: Grammar. I'm good with that shit.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Oh man - I can get carried away in the pursuit of "idea" and forget that a piece has to be, you know, read and enjoyed on a level before that. Also, if you don't want any bigger ideas in your piece, I will force some down your throat for good measure. I'm also not too keen on keeping character motivations intact or consistent, and I'm also not reading heavily for flow, but I can spot it on occasion.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Anything with meaning and feeling. I like to evoke the pathos and the logos. True, meaningful, philosophical - anything that deals with the metaphysical or psychological. But then again, I also like just... a casual read.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I hate angst. I hate overcharged OCs. I hate when characters are blatantly destroyed for the sake of a plotline. Basically anything where the point is "here's wacky adventures lalalala" I have no problem reading, but I'm not going to help you write it. In fact, I refuse.
