|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I first read a chapter for the story. Then I go through it again for grammatical mistakes. The third time I check for story consistency and characterization. I use a highlight/superscript method, which I stole from someone else and has proven to be very helpful.
I'm a college grad and have a masters in education. My mom was an English teacher for 15 years and even though I may not have the best writing skills myself, I can catch other people's mistakes better than my own.
Depending on my schedule my turnaround is anywhere from a day or two to a week. If you want to post the chapter right away, let me know and I will get to it the first moment I have a free chance. I'm also happy to look over something a second time after sending it back to you.
I ask that you at least put your chapter/story through spell check before you send it to me. Sending it as word doc is infinitely better than copying and pasting into an email. Usually funky symbols appear during the transfer and its a pain to have to go and delete them (especially when A`&pq or whatever its appears in place of special characters or apostrophes).
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
As a writer...
Well, I may think I'm good at something when I'm really not. I'll let you read my stories and let you decide for yourself. I personally think my strength is in conversation and in conveying a message.
As a beta...
I pay attention to detail and I will give explanations for most of my editing choices unless it is obvious. I've been asked to proofread numerous things at work before sending them to major corporations or business partners (yeah, not using much of my masters right now).
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
As a writer...
Description. I think. I was so good at it in middle/high school, and I guess something happened in the transfer to college. I think I focus too much on what is being said and how I imagine it in my own head that I lose the descriptions and the ability for my readers to form their own images in their heads. I could be way off base, but thats my personal perception.
As a beta...
Hmmm...I don't know. I guess my turnaround, especially when I get crazy busy - busy like I'm gone from 8am to midnight for a few weeks straight, even on weekends (but it doesn't look like that's going to happen until at least June).
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I'll pretty much read anything.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Graphic sexual heterosexual or homosexual stories. Some is okay, just not chapters and chapters of it - I don't want to beta a smut story; gory blood baths...
