Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have been writing with serious intent for as long as I can remember, and I have been writing fanfiction for more than a decade. I consider fanfiction to be an excellent medium for developing the technical and stylistic elements of writing, since it provides a ready-made world, characters, and back-story, allowing the writer to instead focus on consistent characterization, plotting, description, narrative voice, etc. The only downside I've seen with using fanfiction to develop writing is the community, which tends to be a "Mutual Admiration Society" with most "reviews" being no more than blind praise, the only benefit of which is a boost to the ego. My approach to fanfiction is every bit as serious as my approach to original work; there's nothing I find more difficult to stomach than a writer who practically boasts that their spelling sucks, or who obviously doesn't put any time or effort into fully realizing a story's potential. I understand, and somewhat respect, that some write fics just for fun and don't want to put a lot of thought or work into it, but if you aren't completely serious about developing your skill and refining each story into the best it can be, I am not the beta-reader for you.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I prefer to point out problem areas and give suggestions, but let you decide how to solve the problem, rather than fixing it for you.I have a very strong grasp of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary. I also have a fine sense of how word choice can be used to convey mood, which I am eager to teach. I have an eye for continuity problems, logic failures, and weak plotting. I'm good at pinpointing the strong and weak points in a story and can help you build your narrative around those strengths while patching the weaknesses.I have a fairly sharp sense for characterization, and the ability to tell the difference between when someone's "take" on a character is just different from my own, and when that character is actually OOC. If you like to use Japanese in your fics but don't actually know more than a few words and phrases, I can help you with that - I'm not fluent, but I have a decent grasp of the grammar, some excellent resources, and the inclination to look things up or ask around if I don't know how to phrase something (any opportunity to improve my own Japanese). I know a lot of really random trivia. Some of it is actually useful to writing. I'm an obsessive researcher and I know the ways of the Google; if you need to know something but don't have the time or can't figure out where to begin to look, I can probably help; for instance, I know a great resource for information to help you write injuries and illnesses that are medically accurate (feel free to message me solely for that). I also have a methodology that works very well for ESL writers.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm very blunt; I don't think I go as far as being rude, but I won't spare your feelings when I'm critiquing your work. I do occasionally get into moods where I might be inflexible, opinionated, and incapable of letting something go - this is not my normal mode, so if it happens just tell me to go soak my head and come back when I'm more rational. My job is to advise you, not tell you how or what to write; you get the last word on whether something stays or goes, so don't be afraid to push back.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I almost exclusively read BL (Boys' Love, also known as Yaoi, Shounen Ai, or Slash), and I tend to have OTPs (One True Pairing) in most fandoms and won't read anything that violates them - that is, they don't have to actually be paired together, they just can't be paired with anyone else. I do genuinely like some het pairings, I even have an occasional het OTP, and I'm usually tolerant of any het pairing that doesn't violate an OTP. My OTPs are usually the most popular BL pairings (ie: 1x2, 3x4, Kurama x Hiei), but occasionally not (ie: Aya x Omi). There are also some series where I have no BL OTPs and instead prefer the canon ships (ie: Log Horizon, Princess Tutu) or have no OTPs at all. The list of my OTPs is enormous, so you'll have to ask what they are.

I love long fics with solid plots, preferably in the same genre as the work it's based on - I like a series for a reason, and when I go read fanfics I'm looking for more of the same - this is not an absolute requirement, but I have rejected requests based on my own disinterest in the genre. AUs that have no connection to the original story are not likely to be accepted, and you might want to ask yourself why you aren't writing it as an original story that you could publish.

While I love BL, my interest in a pairing is rarely how "cute" they are or can be together. The pairings I like are ones that have dynamics that interest me, usually ones likely to cause angst or otherwise make the pairing difficult, and I hate seeing a pairing reduced to fluff if there are so many more interesting places to take it.

Though I mostly read BL, I have an extra-special interest in fics with asexual characters, being asexual myself. Also, because I'm asexual, I don't really buy relationships that are based primarily on sexual attraction or "love at first sight", since I have absolutely no frame of reference for those feelings and find the both the concept and the behavioral effects vaguely horrifying.

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Mushy, fluffy, saccharine romance. Normal romance is okay (I prefer it as a side-dish though), but over-the-top romance just makes me nauseous.

Original characters as main characters - 90% of the time these are Mary-Sues, and I just don't want to read it. Obviously you can't stick exclusively to the series' characters all the time, many stories just require that you create your own characters and these characters can be great characters, but please remember who your audience is coming to see.

MPreg - so far, I've only liked a couple of these that I've come across; if you do it, you'd better have a damn good explanation. (Loki is one obvious automatic exception, because myth-canon)

Poetry - Not really something I like.

Songfics - Hate 'em. Want to write a fic around a song and post all the lyrics at the beginning or ending, fine, using a song as inspiration is an excellent way to get writing, and I'd be happy to help you try to form the story around the song, but I find having lyrics interrupting a story extremely irritating, especially since there's a very, very high chance that I won't know the tune that goes with the lyrics.

I will not read High-School or College AUs, or anything in that vein. They're boring.

I will not beta fanfiction for the bastardization of "Card Captor Sakura" known as "Cardcaptors," so don't even ask.

Further, I will not beta fanfiction for any heavily localized version of an anime (this means any series where localization involved changing the characters' names), I never watch dubs and any corrections or advice will be based on the original Japanese. This might be a problem if you are writing a fic based on a dub.

I will not beta fanfiction that changes a character's biological sex or gender identity "just because" or specifically to make a pairing "acceptable" to the writer.

If you mistake a character's biological sex and/or gender identity, I will correct you in the most excruciating detail possible.

Tanuki does not translate as raccoon or badger, it translates as tanuki. It's a species endemic to Japan that is more closely related to your pet dog than the things it is mistranslated as. Seriously, it's like calling a lemur a meerkat. Don't do it.
