|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'll admit I'm not very used to betareading for anyone other than my brothers, but hey, practice makes perfect, right? I am used to proofreading for my parent's letters and documents, though, and have been doing so since somewhere around the third grade. As a result I'm a little bit anal about spelling, grammar, and sentence structure; I have a tendency to restructure even grammatically correct sentences if they come off as awkward. I believe that's just as important as spelling and grammar.
I'm still a bit shy about giving plot suggestions to others, since it is, after all, not my story. I'm hoping to work on that. I'd prefer to only be beta'ing one or at the most two stories at a time, allowing me to give them the attention they deserve, but depending on the respective lengths and how involved the fic is I could be persuaded to pick up another.
Really, I'm still new at this. I've always enjoyed editing but I tend to be wary of stepping on people's toes. At first I may require a bit of pushing from anyone I'm beta'ing for. Please, tell me if you feel I'm being too laid-back over your fic, but let me know if I offend you as well.
I haven't any really impossible expectations of anyone wishing me to beta for them. I only ask that you work with me and not against me. Time delays don't bother me, as I understand real life constraints, but if you expect the time delay to interfere with the DocX program I would suggest using e-mail as a way around it. My e-mail is on my profile page and is checked daily.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm good with spelling and grammar, spelling more than grammar. I do tend to use British spelling as a personal preference so I would ask that you specify if you'd prefer American spelling. While I'm not that confident in my abilities as far as plot goes I'd like to believe I'm also doing well as far as keeping a plot believable and engaging goes- at least, provided it is not a romance story.
I also do well at keeping characters in character. I have some reservations about this, as I don't always feel I've kept them IC as much as I'd like, but as it comes up more often than anything but grammar and spelling in reviews it seems silly not to list it.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am not good with romance. I have never been good with romance. I have only recently gotten over the tendency to kill off characters in romantic stories so I don't have to deal with the actual romantic parts. I am still willing to beta romance, but I warn you that relationships make absolutely no sense to me and as a result I may not be the person you want betareading your romance stories.
I have a tendency to let too many plots and subplots get going and to end up in a position where it is all but impossible to wrap them up convincingly, and I may not be good at seeing this in other's stories.
Also, and most importantly, I am mortally afraid of offending people. Please don't let me cop out on your story because I don't want to offend you. That is unfair to the story and to you. I am hoping to get over this, but for now, nag me until I'm completely honest with you.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I'm pretty easygoing. I'd be perfectly all right with beta'ing just about anything, provided I'm familiar with the genre. I'm actually familiar with many more genres than I've actively written about so if you're not sure about yours, contact me and I'll let you know as soon as possible whether it is a genre I'm interested in. I will say this, though, as it's been very popular lately; I don't do Naruto. I am simply not interested in it. The only other genre I am familiar with yet may refuse is Harry Potter, but it wouldn't be too hard to convince me to beta a Harry Potter story. Please note that in my Preference settings when a preference is a series, I may not have played/watched everything in the series. For example, I have played Shadow Hearts, but I have never been able to bring myself to play Shadow Hearts II. Again, contact me with questions.
I have no objections to het, slash, femslash, or even threesomes provided they are tastefully done, manage to remain in character, and you can provide me some justification for the pairing. The only time I won't want justification is for Final Fantasy VII fics- I will read just about any pairing for that. I have no idea why that should be.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I draw the line at incest, and I'm not big on romance but I'm hardly dead-set against it. I am not inherently opposed to original characters but if your OC is a Mary Sue I will not beta your story. If you are incapable of proper English I will not beta your story. I don't think that requirement is too much to ask under the circumstances. I don't understand and don't want to read textspeak.
