Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
For me, fanfiction is for fun, definitely. However, I feel that published fanfiction needs to be putting ones best foot forward. In other words not putting out something that is obviously a rough draft. I personally feel that that is not only part of the fun of writing, but also, one gets more out of it if they know they have done a good job. My goal as a beta reader is to help you feel you have done the best you can do and that you also feel proud of yourself as well as help you grow to the point that you hopefully don't need my help anymore, or at least not as much as you once /

br /

That also said I need to make it clear that it is NOT the job of the Beta Reader to do the writing for you. If we're doing anything beyond being an editor or making suggestions we are then a co-writer. I've always put my foot down on this, but I've heard horror stories from other Beta Readers who ended up being co-writers instead and not getting due credit for their writing. If you're looking for someone to write the story for you I not only suggest skipping me for a Beta Reader as well as everyone else as that is not a respectful thing to do to someone who is lending you a helping hand. Sure, you are likely to eventually find a Beta Reader who will act as a co-writer, but the good ones will eventually drop you and word can spread that you're trying to get other people to writer your story. br /

br /

If you want a co-writer be upfront and promise due credit and expect to be called out publicly if you do not give the credit that is due.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
1. Characterization – Did you know it is possible to turn a canon character into a Mary Sue or a Gary Stu? Did you know it is possible to write your own characters OoC even though you the writer created them? Proper characterization in the long run is based not on what the writer decides to have the characters do but based on how the particular personality the character has and real world logic. On top of this you can turn a character into an MS/GS and even a self-insert if you aren't careful. Do they act in character? Are the out of character moments still in character based on proper development? Does your character have powers or abilities that defy the rules of the fandom for no good reason? These are just some of the things I look /

br /

2. Plot – A good plot has a solid beginning, middle and end to the story. The most basic plot line follows a linear time line. However, more complex plot lines can move to nonlinear and/or even have so many directions that some help is needed. There are also no matter how much you don't like hearing this things that never are /

br /

3. Formatting/Poetry – I may not be good at spelling and grammar, but I can tell if something is easy to read. I can also tell if poetry has an actual rhythm to it. The critique will be simple and basic. No getting into metaphors and similes, or even the more technical side. Basic rules for various poems, but not the more complex rules are also things I check /

br /

4. AU/Canon – AU does not mean you can change things in canon any way you want to. There are certain changes you should never do. There are also things you shouldn't change unless you have good reason too. My motto is “you break canon, you fix it so it is still believable”.br /

br /

5. Brainstorming – Need help working out something? I'll give tips and even help work out kinks in more complex plots.

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
1. Spelling and some grammar - I can beta for it, but I am not the best candidate for this. This is actually my greatest weak point that I need help with /

br /

2. If I see something that can or needs to be improved, I will not hesitate to point it out. But, when I do this, I will try to be as kind as possible. Also, some of my advice given is more along the lines of optional, in other words just suggestions. However, if I see something like the rules being broken... I will insist that you make it rule compliant. Many if not all of the rules are there for a /

br /

3. I will tell you if something isn't unique. By this I don't mean "the idea has been done before" but "the idea has been done before and you're not bringing anything new to the table".

Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
This one is hard. I like all kinds of fanfiction, whether it is canon based or AU. I like all the genera, but I think it would be best to tell what isn't my cup of tea. I love crossovers, I prefer them though with things that I know. Also, I like parodies and AU's. I also like people to have an idea of where they want to /

br /

NOTE: I will read crossovers between any of the categories.

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Ironically, I've left this in reviews for stories that I wasn't fond of but did like how the author was /

br /

1. Slash is out because this is my personal preference. Please respect /

br /

2. Hard core horror, though soft core horror is my /

br /

3. Sappy romances that are very mushy, though I will read /

br /

Note: For Transformers I do well for up to Beast Machines and then the movies. That's the canon I know /

br /

4. Fics that blatantly disresepct the fandom or the readers by bashing the /

br /

5. Mary Sue bashing fics that are distasteful and hurtful, in fact any fic that's soul purpose is to hurt an indtended /

br /

6. Anything that is so hardcore it is gross... I think you can figure that /

br /

7. Toilet humor - It isn't the same as the above, I just don't get /

br /

I also would prefer not to read crossovers that I know nothing about any of the fandoms for.
