I really like this headcanon, and it's definitely supported by some of Gai's scenes. It would explain his inability to remember Kisame, and moreover, Gai outright admitted that he isn't good with faces during the war. The way you described everyone and the way Gai is oblivious (the way people with poor eyesight are just oblivious to the fact that other people can apparently see leaves on trees, as a quick comparison) were written really well and so believably.

Gai's moment with Kakashi was great as always. You write amazing chemistry between those two, you capture it really well. Kakashi looking out for Gai's "secret" is so sweet of him.
