typically the single pawn issue is due to power balance/ in many of the naruto fics where he is reincarnated as a devil, he is somehow weakened by his journey to DXD, thus lowering his resurrection cost. add onto this, that he often no longer is a jinchuriki in those moments, but a full human? his "Price" is lowered significantly.

as to why a pawn? it actually has less to do with cost, and more to do with versatility. as Pawns have access to Promotion. and can become ANY other piece. depending on the situation, this can be a MASSIVE game changer.

Issei proves this in canon, even developing skills built around the promotion system to give him a virtual catalogue of skills and attacks to suit almost any opponent.

it was only in the last couple of years that Issei finally Promoted to Queen in battle. and his new battle form is actually pretty freaking awesome.

Pawns have a flexibility to them in the DXD universe that allows them to become almost anything the author can imagine. THAT is why it is such a popular resurrection method.

plus, many of the characters are the types who like to build their own personal power through training. so while pawn gives them options, it does not actually give them much in the way of a personal power boost. thus the characters can have a personal story arc built around them getting stronger, both as a fighter, and as a character.

Welp. Im dropping. As good as it is, there's also a lot of flaws and unnecesarry info dumps/word padding. The battle with Azazel was disappointing. Long and boring descriptions, a single action has 3 paragraph of words, useless POV filler, the pace of the fight is slow, the Fallens were weak, slash n hack and throw their light spears, some greek formation that took more paragraphs to introduce its origin, and a lot of unnecesarry explanations DURING a fight. For all that Azazel said that he won't hold back in his final fight, all he did was create a lot of light spears, shoot it at Shirou, and hack n slash Shirou's blades. No Grand magic spells, techniques or trump cards.

Then we have this new antagonist that we know nothing about and does not belong in DxD universe, Sekerei's Karasuba. Who is this mysterious, edgy girl and why is everyone panicking. Whatever. It's not worth it and I've lost interest. You're still a good writer to come up with interesting ideals and background of each character.

This was pretty good. Not number one of all Fate crossover stories good. But definitely top fifty. And it is unfortunately also dropped like ninety percent of those top fifty. And right when things were starting too get complicated. Partially because of (even more drastic) canon divergences and partially because of different sources of complexity.
