Sounds like your brother's an ass. Fanfics are pretty much stories written in your own way. Look at the majority of myths and legends for crying out loud, pretty sure they're all fanfiction in a way.

Eh, there is a whole debate about the validity of fanfiction.

Some people use poor examples on their arguments, like using things like Paradise Lost and Dante as examples of fanfiction, since those actually created a lot of its own lore, just using the Bible as a base. It would be like calling Percy Jackson greek mythology fanfiction.

I myself would use Expanded Universes as a better example. They use an existing backstory from the original work, and expand and add to it but don't try to stand as their own work. They are just... written by already-established writers most of the time. And unlike fanfiction, strive to not go against the established lore, even among other EU stuff. Something most fanfiction do not really try - and in fact most of them are written exactly to introduce possibilities from changes in canon, the very opposite.

The best ACTUAL example of a defense of fanfics I know is from when someone tried to ask established writer Neil Gaiman about them, clearly wanting him to agree with them that fanfictions were bad writing.
Gaiman instead pointed out that he won a Hugo Award from A Study in Emerald, something he described himself as a crossover fanfic of Sherlock Holmes and Lovecraft.

For me, one of both the best and the worst part of fanfic is how it uses a pre-made backstory, thus not needing or giving training in creating those. On one hand, that allows you to train your writing skills besides that. On the other, that makes it harder when you do need to write a backstory yourself later.

Then there are points that Sarah Z made in her "An Exhaustive Defense of Fanfiction" video.

About how the most famous cases of fanfiction authors turned into original writers (Twilight and 50 Shades) were actually badly cleaned up versions of their fanfics and thus, for example,
not much work was given into making the characters interesting since in the original work they were ALREADY established, only with slight changes to fit the new setting,
or how thanks to fanfiction's episodic nature they could see what plot points the readers were interested in so they were rushed or dropped quickly, something that is easier to let pass in a fanfic over a proper book you pay for.

Of course, those are things easy to fix with some extra work and an editor to check for those inconsistencies. Or if the new work was rewritten as if for someone who never knew of the original works, something that I struggle with (but try) but an experienced writer like Neil Gaiman would already have experience doing.

The harem is not guaranteed, eh? I will admit that if Issei does get a harem, I do hope that Asia is part of it, but Issei and Aika together as a single pairing can also work well.

Um. Well I will say this, the idea has merit. It has the potential to be interesting. However, the changes are so massive and the character dialogue is so forced that I'm obligated to tell ya it seriously needs a rewrite. I know your going for crack. But crack can be extremely funny and also a good read. Instead this is like some of those older trashy harem fics in which they say hello and start fkn immediately. I know that's not what happened but its how the dialogue and general feel of the story is flowing. Just a heads up.

Ah had a bit of a mid life crisis there huh. Crazy stuff.
