Reviews for Sunrider: The Novelization
kinglan10 chapter 1 . 4/28/2021
Hello, interesting and fun 1st chapter. :)

Though I am wondering if you are continuing to work on this story what with there being no updates since 2017 and the story lacking a complete tag. Well I do hope there is more of this fanfic, after all the Sunrider series was pretty enjoyable lol.
Inebriated Caffeine Imbiber chapter 29 . 9/6/2018
I have thoroughly and unequivocally enjoyed this well thought and fleshed out adaptation. I was always wanting to read more and more as you brought the turmoil of each character to life and tapped into their hearts that aren't really shown in the game.

You allowed us a better understanding of the characters, and of the story. You had us at the very beginning.

I am eager to see if you continue into Liberation Day.

Thank you so much for this!

I think I felt a tear in my eye when I found this story, well written and close to cannon with just enough thrown in to flesh it out
Danny Barefoot chapter 29 . 5/22/2017
Well done for writing this, I've enjoyed playing Sunrider and your story is certainly a worthy adaption. The technical inserts are especially good, such Icari's drop pods idea for the wedding crash and the shield generator getting burnt out in chpt 1. The amusing asides, like the normal crew's, and indeed the pilots' reaction to Claude, or Ava checking her weapon before meeting Asuga, are also appreciated. The same three sections really do get compromised every time...

It's nice to see more of the general crew, and the combat is quite exciting. It's unavoidable that there's so much of it, and you've done well in varying the action; the pursuit near Helion was a great idea. In the first mission with Assault Carriers I had the same idea of using short range warp and vanguard cannon. In the slaver mission I assumed the pirates were caught setting out on a raid, so they didn't have any hostages, but your idea was more dramatic. I though maybe the emotional writing could be a little sharper in places, like the line from Ava's father, but I mainly say that because I like that scene so much.

Ava is definitely the best girl for Kayto, their added emotional moments in chpt 7 and especially 27 were very well done. I'm amazed they left their promise out the censored version of the game. I'd be rather happier if there were no sex scenes in Sunrider; Claude and Kayto is a trashy porn setup, Kayto and Chigara in Liberation Day is disgustingly creepy. Kayto and Ava in your uncensored story though, sounds like what every teenage couple that doesn't perceive the necessity of marriage would want their first time to be. I'd still prefer rather less explicitness, but oh well.

Are you going to continue the story through Liberation Day?
Sullen Frog chapter 1 . 3/17/2017
It's a good start, but you made a technical goof.

You describe the Sunrider's Savior guns as having 150-meter long gunbarrels. I just finished playing the two games a few days ago, so I know that the Saviors are pretty small in relation to the rest of the ship. My math is admittedly a little iffy, but if the proportions of the ship are the same as they are in the game, that would make the Sunrider gigantic.

For reference, I'm looking at a blown-up image of the Sunrider which is about 13 inches long, with the Savior gunbarrels (just the barrels) being about half an inch in length. If we accept your figure that the barrels are 150m long, and the proportions are the same, then that would make the Sunrider 3.9 kilometers long-one and a third times the size of the Legion.

Also, you're missing a few words here and there. For example, "A hellish [light?] flared across the main screen[...]".

Still, you've done a good job of capturing the feel of Sunrider so far. I look forward to how the rest of this story unfolds.

These are great updates, I'm loving them.

However one problem I have with this chapter is you missed out 'little' from when Kayto refers to Cossette and we both know how touchy she is about her height, don't we?
ChloboShoka chapter 1 . 11/11/2016
This is really good so far, reminds me of the game so much.
GeonteneArgon00 chapter 27 . 11/28/2015
Again, I like how you wrote much of the story... but, I feel I have to play devil's advocate here and point out that I think not attacking the Legion was the wrong move narrative-wise, for several reasons (including how the Beta of Liberation Day showed the aftermath of destroying the Legion, though I won't spoil that here in public comments).

1. This is Ava's fight, too - Kayto may see Ava as his last remaining link to the past, but, based on everything else he's done at this point, he also should be able to accept by now that things like this are no longer his arbitrary choice. Ava has had just as much bottled-up emotions, even if she hid it better, and this was perhaps as much about her and Kayto both finishing this fight.

2. Trust is fatally compromised - Ava and Kayto are meant to be partners, and, while that means watching out for each-other, it also means learning to trust the other person to make the right call. Kayto up until this point arguably has never let Ava make that call (at least by way of the Novelization's
"Moralist-centered" interpretation), and this felt like it ought to have been the best time to do so.

3. It offers a full sense of closure to their story thus far - Ever since the start of the story, the Legion has effectively haunted and hunted the Sunrider at every opportunity. It's destruction not only offers a more conclusive and solid justification for Kayto's demons to finally start resting but for Ava's as well as she may likely, due to her over-achiever nature, feel this helps compensate or at least start repaying the things she lost at Cera. It would also let Ava and Kayto more solidly feel they could move on from that and start building from here, whereas it seems more likely that Ava would fatally shut Kayto out for this.

Again, I understand it's your story and your decision to have written it like this... but even from a "Moralist" standpoint, it doesn't feel right because this choice really isn't a "Moralist" or "Prince" decision and is arguably the most grey-area choice you can make in the game, both in the large-scale and personal-scale regarding the repercussions.
Drake the Gunner chapter 5 . 10/5/2015
This is BADASS! I'm more surprised it's been accepted as the OFFICIAL novelization of the game... just absolutely BADASS! How was it noticed!? I really MUST know. Because SEMPAI NOTICED YOU!
GeonteneArgon00 chapter 1 . 9/21/2015
I hate to be the one negative voice in all this... but... your timeline is a bit skewered.

Example: In the game, Icari is 25 and her family died when she was twelve. You say she was five... and yet your "Sunrider: Veniczar" series depicts the PACT Revolution having not been "PACT" until only six years before the game. By the game's timeline, you're seven years late in PACT's creation - and by your OWN timeline, you're off by nineteen.

Also, in the Chapter "Promise", it doesn't make sense for the PACT units to be trying to shoot down the Sunrider because they were told to capture Asaga ALIVE - sending the ship plummeting into Helion seems to be disobeying Arcadius' orders.

Don't get me wrong - I like a lot of what you've done with the story and lore. I just wanted to know if you were aware of the discrepancies.
Sherlockinater chapter 27 . 8/30/2015
DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUUUN!

I never actually realized Arcadius was a female until the developer said so in a tweet, or addressed the question. I always thought she was a guy, it's sometimes hard to tell in Anime.
When I last did this mission, I chose tol destroy the Legion. Asaga ended up single handedly destroying almost all the Arcadiuses, with Chigara healing her. Every other ship and Ryder was destroyed. So OP.

Looking forward to the Liberation Day one.
ScottyBotty chapter 27 . 8/28/2015
I have to agree with Jimmz, if ever an anime of Sunrider came about this novel should be the script for it.
Amazing work my good man, couldn't of asked for a better novelization. Looking forward to your other works. If they're anything like this I'm all over it.
I see you went with the whole, not having Ava become 'half the woman' choice. I always personally went with the destruction of the Legion. It's far too dangerous too leave alive. Also, I don't really care for Ava, the Tsundere is all I need.
Jimmz147 chapter 26 . 8/25/2015
Just finished reading last chapter and author yet again managed to surpass all my expectations. Turning the ship around, deployment of the ryders and Sola's charge...simply epic. If someone make an anime with this novelization as basis, it would stomp most of the space/mecha genre to the ground.
