I have not read other reviews, but I think that we may discover that James comments to Edward about his prolifications to being a back door gentleman may be a result of mistaken identity and it was Anthony who was the one who was gay. It explains why he left Bella untouched for so long and explains Edward's hesitantly in elaborating on Anthony.
