Well, if I had to go for a pairing, I'd go for Jaune/Yang. It's a fairly underused pairing, and it kinda fits thematically here with the whole deal regarding his mother and auntie, who could be compared with Yang and Ruby respectively.

Im guessing from his focus on ballistics his weapon is going to be some kind of mortar or railgun, just guessing though. Also good job, it's rare finding AUs of jaune that don't explore the why or how of his new strength. Keep it up.

As for pairings, either Ruby or Yang would seem to work in this. This chapter already has Yang hanging out with Jaune which could evolve into a future relationship. Striking up a good friendship with Ruby and watching out for her like one of his own sisters could make him more appealing to Yang as well.

As for a Ruby route, they could already become friends with how Jaune was in canon. His higher display of knowledge and a potentially interesting weapon might create the possibility of more. Combining what the book teaches him about the subject plus his own way of looking at things with Ruby’s interest and knowledge in weaponry could result in longs talks on the subject which could bring them closer as friends or romantic interests.

And even though it’s highly unlikely since she hasn’t even shown up in this story, I’ll throw in a suggestion of Blake for the pairing. I find attempts at writing the two forming a relationship the most interesting to me lately when things branch out from Arkos. If you’re interested in bringing her into the story regardless of pairing possibility, she could be a recent addition to the apartments Jaune is staying at. An apparently low priced place for a former white fang member to lay low as she decides what to make of herself now that is outside the bustling major cities but close to a place the white fang probably doesn’t want to go near without a specific need.

Hey man I'm cool with whatever primary pairings you decide to throw in, well except maybe Arkos. I just find that one boring. And considering you already have him studying in Signal, Yang or Ruby would be nice given there's a lack of both of those around this site.

Anyway, interesting chapter. Bit of a timeskip after the last one and it's slowly establishing what kind of person Jaune is. All his reading is paying off and he's becoming better and better at technical and analytical thinking it seems, as well as a proficiency in Dust. I am curious as to what weapon it is you gave him so I'm excited to see what comes out of that.

Apart from that, I have a soft spot for Milk and Cereal, so that's an idea.

I know the pain of second-guessing your own work, and usually your first instinct is the right one! So good on you for going with it. As is, the timeskip didn't disorient me in the least. Everything was rather well-presented, and adding the social interaction there kept it from being a pure setup/infodump chapter, so don't worry about it!

So I loved this chapter, and enjoy how Jaune is getting smarter. I don't know how you are going to have this story go, have some ideas but I am excited for more! I was thinking that a great way for the story to go would for the pairing to be Jaune and Yang, with Jaune becoming an introvert with the dust and his book, with Yang being the person who gets him to open up?
