I mean I don't know why he is questioning it. There is a reason everyone has gunswords: Actually swapping between two different weapons takes way too long. Or rather, all fanfic authors the original show decided to arbitrarily make it take way too long.
Which leads to my next point. Yang is a good distance away across the stage, and somehow can burst into a sprint all the way across fast enough that Jaune doesn't think he could have drawn his sword or gun? I'm sorry, is Jaune moving in fucking slow-mo? If someone can move that far that fast, that big of instant acceleration, then you can draw and/or change weapons in a fraction of a second. Straight changing weapons should not be any slower than any mechashifting. The advantage of mechashifting is not having to make any potentially awkward movements, as well as being able to change modes in situations with less maneuverability.

And Jaune missing that shot? I'm sorry but that fight reads to me as Yang's plot armor to remain undefeated - she didn't actually beat Jaune, the plot changed physics so she could win, or something. Five shots nailed with accuracy, then the next lined up at a closer distance - easier shot - somehow misses? Right. In an actual fight it word have played out thusly: If Jaune can get a dustshot off, Yang loses. Her victory condition is to beat him before he is able to. There is no superbly convenient misses.

Side note: I realize I'm mostly just bitching in these comments - please know that I'm just not pointing out the parts I do like. It isn't that I think everything is wrong with this story - the fact I'm still reading it and didn't give up on it in a rage hopefully at least hints at that. I do like most of it, I'm just pointing out the things I hate about Jaune for the most part, things about his character in general, not necessarily your portrayal of him.

Jaune did admirably at keeping his distance - considering Yang as a nearly pure melee fighter has to be incredibly skilled at closing gaps against ranged opponents.
However - for someone who primarily has used melee up 'til now, why was he such a fucking potato in close range? I'd say his melee performance was as if he had never fought a melee battle before at all.

Another thing, please don't tell me Jaune is going to be such a pathetic wimp w/ Yang, or even others. Grow a fucking backbone, she hits you hit her back, she tries to force you into something SAY NO. Have free will. Don't be a doormat - you're trying to become a hunter damn it.

Someone told me about this so I deiced to give it a shot but honestly I can't get past the first chapter because it makes no sense and one of my major pet peeves is right here that I hate in stories. Why is there someone under 16 years of age (most likely 14 or 15 at this point) who is just living on his own in an apartment?

You would easily have just had him living with like an aunt and/or uncle or another sister or some kind of relative. That would have made so much more sense. There's no explanation of why Jaune is on his own, how he's living on his own or anything else for a minor that make any kind of logical sense in the first chapter and to me it needs to be explained in the first chapter. I just hate these kinds of tropes because they would never work in real life and really takes me out of the story.
