the technical term is a Ward in Chancery, not Ward of the Crown, but unless you're a Brit and/or a social historian, you can't be expected to know that. Essentially it comes to the same thing, and nowadays it's a lot more regulated and isn't a legal way[as it used to be] for a monarch to reward a crony by essentially let them milk the estate of the said ward. [people used to BID for wardships!]

tbf there kind of is, it's called a Ward/Ward of the Court and since the government is headed by the Queen at that time even if her powers were mostly ceremonial it still works.
