Not badly written actually. MacCready is my most used companion too for one of my main characters (Lauren). I personally think that a relationship of them being best friends would be better than lovers because I've already seen way too much of that but barely any of just friend relationships with Mac. It's still your choice as the creator and I advise that you go where you want with the story, but I think it would be more original if they were just friends.
