This was beautiful.
Love how so much of this was nothing more than a recap, and yet it was so profound. I particularly loved the part in the car, about how the shouts seemed welcoming because she had been dreading a gunshot, and how she couldn't reach out to Georg and comment about him being okay, because they needed to go that minute.
And in between that there were the scenes that got a bit more time (or at least seemed to - probably because there was dialogue). Love that Georg told her his purpose was the children and her, and how she was still in awe and so very grateful about where she was in life.
Also loved how her first move upon their arrival was to check if the children were home, because she didn't want them around to see the flag. And that, for the first time, she saw fear in her Captain's eyes when he told her the news, and shared that bittersweet moment of leaving the house.
And the final thoughts on the mountain being how everything had, and would always come full circle were perfect.

A belated but warm welcome to the TSOM fandom! This was a beautiful sweet, romantic story, from Maria's perspective as she reflects on the events from the comfort of her husband's arms. Great descriptions of the frightening events leading to their escape. Loved the last paragraph with its analogies of climbing mountains. Looking forward to reading more.
