Reviews for Mass Effect: Newton's Third Law |
---|
![]() ![]() I know this series has been over for a while now, but it's november and I'm loving this fic now, so I just wanted to say this all your other jalissa/ME fics are some of my favorites of all time. like not just for this fandom, but just fave fics I've ever read. the way you captured the spirit of the series and characters even and especially as you changed and expanded the canon is incredible. I'm gonna think about these every time I replay the games now, and thank you very much for sharing your work with the world. I hope you are doing well, and find happiness in all your future projects! |

![]() ![]() ![]() Okay, so first off; this series was literally part of my childhood. I spent my high school years looking forward to updates. I remember reading new chapters in class when I was supposed to be working. It took a really long hiatus for me to stop checking this series, and when I finally looked and realized it was finished, I just picked up where I thought I left off, because it was so long I didn't want to have to chew through a literal million words to reach what happened next. Then a couple of months ago, it hit me that because of that, I never sat down and did a full read of the series, back to back, like most people do with their favorite books. So, I started reading. I slowed down partway through this installment only because I've been sustaining myself with slim jims and Newtons Laws during breaks and lunch and didn't want to have to find a new book TOO soon. And MAN, it's been a roller coaster. Like, there is no Mass Effect canon, but if you asked me to point at the best possible way to adapt it into an official novel, I would point at this series. Newton's Second was a gut punch to my nostalgia, since that was the one I read through high school, and just the sheer number of things I kept coming across that I had forgotten shaped my own headcanon for Mass Effect was astounding. Like claustrophobic Javik, for example. I'd find them and be all like 'so that's where I got that idea from'; reading this as a teenager. There are so many things I loved forgot about this series, and I'm glad I took the time to reread it. The fact you manage to fit so much characterization and detail into succinct chapters is absolutely masterful, and only now that I'm older can I truly appreciate it. It would be hard to point out a favorite part for this series, but I think the biggest contender is your characterization for Thane. It's the best I've ever seen, and the knowledge that there would be no more Thane chapters was half the grief. All the characters were written well, but Thane was just next level, though your depiction of Javik runs pretty close to a tie. All in all, I'm glad I finally read the whole thing cover to cover. You are a master wordsmith, and I tip my hat to you, Raven Studios. I might do this again in a few years, even, daunting a read as it may be. I'll probably open Newton's Second a few times by itself though, purely because that's the one I'm most nostalgic for. And, with that word vomit of a review, I Fare Thee Well. |
![]() ![]() Holy moly. I salute the effort and skill it took to put this series together. This ranks up there as one of the best, if not THE best FShenko fics there is, and I'm not ashamed to say I binged 1 and 2 in 48h. I am totally bookmarking this to return to in future. Also, do pardon the self plug: if you ever have the time or inclination, do check out 'Communications' by SpaceCatnip at AO3 :) |
![]() ![]() ![]() (Blackadder enters with the actors after having spent the previous scene ignoring their knocking at the door) Blackadder: You should have knocked. Keanrick: Our knocks, you impertinent butler, were loud enough to wake the hounds of Hell! (He and Mossop hand Blackadder their hats; Keanrick turns to Mossop) Lead on, Macduff. Mossop: I shall. (As the actors move to the next room, Blackadder drops their hats on the floor and kicks them through the door before closing it) Lest you continue in your quotation, and mention the name of the Scottish Play. Keanrick: (Chuckles) Never fear, I shan't do that! Blackadder: By "the Scottish Play", I assume you mean Macbeth. Keanrick, Mossop: AHH! (They begin making pat-a-cake motions) Hot potato, orchestra stalls, Puck will make amends! (They finish by tweaking each other's noses) Ahh! Blackadder: What was that? Keanrick: We were exorcising evil spirits. Being but a mere butler, you will not know the great theatre tradition that one does never speak the name of the Scottish play. Blackadder: What, Macbeth? Keanrick, Mossop: AHH! (Pat-a-cake motions) Hot potato, orchestra stalls, Puck will make amends! (Tweak) Ahh! Blackadder: Oh, you mean you have to do that every time I say "Macbeth"? Keanrick, Mossop: AHH! (Pat-a-cake motions) Hot potato, orchestra stalls, Puck will make amends! (Tweak) Ahh! Mossop: Will you please stop saying that!... (Rubs his sore nose) Always call it "the Scottish Play"! Blackadder: So you want me to say "the Scottish Play". Keanrick, Mossop: YES! Blackadder: Rather than "Macbeth". Keanrick, Mossop: AHH! (Pat-a-cake motions) Hot potato, orchestra stalls, Puck will make amends! (Tweak) Ahh! Prince: (Entering) I say, what is all this hullabaloo, all this shouting, and screaming, and yelling blue murder? (The actors bow deeply before him) Why, it was like that play we saw the other day, what was it called, er... Blackadder: Macbeth, sir? Keanrick, Mossop: (Still bent over bowing) AHH! (Pat-a-cake motions, but now side by side rather than facing each other) Hot potato, orchestra stalls, Puck will make amends! (This time, they tweak their own noses) Oooh! Prince: (Motions the actors to stand up again) No no no, it was, it was called Julius Caesar. Blackadder: Oh yes, of course. Julius Caesar. (Beat) Not Macbeth. Keanrick, Mossop: AHH! (Pat-a-cake motions) Hot potato, orchestra stalls, Puck will make amends! (Tweak) Ahh! |
![]() ![]() ![]() Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy: (Referring to a patient made entirely out of stone) I’m a doctor, not a brick layer! Captain James “Jim” Tiberius Kirk: You’re a healer, there’s a patient. That’s an order. |

![]() ![]() ![]() Have you ever seen Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.? I’m asking because I actually think that the actor who played the main male scientist and the actress who plays his wife would be a good fit for Daniels and Donnelly in a live action Mass Effect movie/TV series |
![]() ![]() ![]() Space magic, huh? So I guess that makes Shepard a force user. Maybe even a Jedi! |
![]() ![]() ![]() On the short side? She's taller than the female Shepard in the games. |
![]() ![]() ![]() I can’t help but wonder what would happen if Javik or Vega ended up eating some of those. |
![]() ![]() ![]() (Continuing the phrase that t( title is a part of) Or not to be, that is the question. |
![]() ![]() ![]() I will never not find that scene hilarious! And the scene after this when you go to talk to Wrex: Shepard: That’s it for now, Wrex. Let’s get back to work. Wrex: (Slightly groans in pain) Yeah. Shepard: Something wrong? Wrex: Mordin. He got his tissue sample from me all right. (Turns around to go back to work) Let’s just say scalpels we’re never meant to cut where he cut. |
![]() ![]() ![]() Thank you very much. I enjoyed that. It was short but was also a fantastic scene that I'm now going to add to my personal head canon. |
