Reviews for The Madness of Merlin
Kodachi Claws chapter 2 . 12/28/2019
Ehhh...this honestly was filler.
Granted, there is a good story out there about Merlin adapting to the modern world and have one of King Arthur’s enemies/fling as part of the Illuminati, but this just didn’t move the story forward in any meaningful way. I wouldn’t mind AS much if this were animated or even if it was a comic, but since text is all you’ve got to work with right now, you’ve got to really nail the stories out of the park.

It’s pretty interesting that despite most of the Pack being known criminals now, networks are still willing to air their show in syndication. Wonder how Morgan will use them...

Count me in as somebody else who loves the relationship you are building between Griff and Merlin. Not all of our heroes SHOULD get along. If there's tension among our villains, then our heroes should have tension with each other as well.

The return of the Round Table was a pleasant surprise.

So was the new first appearance of Morgana le Fay. I'm thankful you allowed me to introduce her, but reading in order, I'm glad her first appearance was written by you.

On reflection, I'm glad Arthur and Griff didn't have to kill a real dragon.

I really like the dynamic you're setting up with Griff and Merlin continuing to butt heads while poor Arthur's stuck playing peacemaker. Kinda reminds me of the classic Kirk-Spock-Bones trifecta.

Funny, I don't recall ever going to the UK!

So far, so good. I think what stood out to me the most was that Merlin had no idea what Uther was planning to do with the glamour until after the fact. Normally I am very much against the white washing of the darker aspects of heroic characters, but with modern sensibilities (and honestly, this should always have been the sensibility), there is no way to make Merlin a willing participant in Uther's assault on Igraine and keep him even close to heroic. He becomes, at best, an "ends justify the means" character... and, in this case, that would be putting it kindly. But times change, stories need to evolve while not forgetting their roots and I think you found a great place to land.

Funny enough, back in the TGS days, Merlin's part Uther's assault on Igraine caused no end of debate, and fan comments. I wrote long defenses of Merlin there and, looking back on them now, I cringe. In my defense, I was a teenager and in my early twenties. But... well, I don't know what the answer was back then. All I can say is that every writer meant well.

It's sort of what I did in "Sorrows to the Stones". I kept Lavinia's assault and mutilation while removing the more problematic aspects. The rape and the honor killing... because, quite frankly, I couldn't keep that.

Fantastic start, I can't wait for chapter two!

FIRST!

Now that's out of the way, colour me intrigued. I'm liking the opportunity to delve into Merlin's character a bit more. From his point-blank refusal to make a glamour charm to his equally rusty social skills.

Kelpie's fun, you always had a good eye for OCs.

Look forward to whatever's next
