Very powerful. You've captured Beckett's character perfectly as always. I find myself wondering what happened between her and Demming (although I guess it's not pertinent to the story), since Tom really was perfect for her and Castle wasn't there to mess things up. Interesting that she wound up with Josh regardless.

And that closing scene: oh my. I suspected that about Martha but I never would have thought about something happening to Alexis - guaranteed, the only thing that would send Castle off the deep end. I'm living forward to the reunion, but it probably won't be pretty.

Gut wrenching! That opening conversation was clearly overdue. But why hadn’t Beckett been more inquisitive about why the novel had been delayed? I was immediately curious but she clearly still thinks about him, even foolishly brings him up to her almost-fiancé, and she’s supposed to be a fan of his... not to mention an actual detective! How could she not know this? Was she still THAT angry with him?

And counterpoint to her willful blindness, I wouldn’t be surprised if Rick knew everything about her. Was he too debilitated by his grief to think to reach out or just knew that she had seemingly moved on? Still play poker with Toy? Do Espo, Ryan or Lanie know these things but we’re sworn to silence? And the big one - with nothing left to live for and left all alone in the world - neglecting his writing and after having been dismissed for looking into Kate’s mothers murder - is he already on the verge of completely solving it?

What a heart breaking start to the story! But I’m hooked. I hope Kate reaches out to Rick soon, perhaps they will meet up at the publishing party for heat wave. Also I hope we find out what happened to Alexis and Martha. Thanks for another compelling story

I admit I didn't expect to read that Alexis had passed in addition to Martha, but it helps to explain Castle's withdrawal. Looking forward to the rest of the story.
