I felt identified with Kotoko. I just got accepted into the medicine program where only a few get in. When we enter we get assigned a “block” based on the punctuation of the entrance exam GPA. I am block 13, which is basically the F class, barely got in.

I really enjoyed this version of Naoki and Kotoko. The anime and manga versions of them had always rubbed me the wrong way. Kotoko was a bit too obnoxious and dumb that it didn't really endear her to me, same with Naoki but he was too cold. It made him come across as...a tad emotionally abusive.

But your versions were so much more likable. Naoki, while intelligent and still socially stunted, was at least willing to to talk things out and bother with Kotoko's antics. And Kotoko, while still ditzy was self aware of her own short comings and while she couldn't put it into words, had an internal understanding of herself that was refreshing for a character that struggled academically.

I liked their relationship dynamic so much. In the anime it was always so one sided and really made Kotoko the butt of the joke or harsh words when it was so unnecessary. It wasn't ever really funny. But with your rendition, they actually have a really cute kind of history and meet cute. She hides from him for 2 years for the fear of social suicide. It's such a unique take and really endeared me to kotoko's quirky, out of the box thinking. Naoki is amused by this, he is smitten without realizing it, and his teasing isn't hurtful like it was so often in the anime and manga. He had actual input and drive to develop a relationship with her and reading their banter was cute.
