Reviews for On Pain Of Death
The Reviews Corner Official chapter 1 . 8/20/2020
This was... woah.

Poor poor Narcissa. She just wanted a normal loving husband, and a normal relationship. And the way she was jealous of the baby, I'm sure many women can relate. It's so sad. And in the end we found out that Lucius truly loved her! Ahhh this is so tragic.

I really LOVE what you did with this story. It's so brilliantly written and so so creative. And woah the way you changed my perspective of Lucius in the last scene—gotta hand it to you. Rabastan, wow, that is so freaking low. You need to be heartless to do something like that.

I also have to comment on your writing style. It was so. so. so. good. Towards the end, it was more fast paced—which favoured the story since Narcissa felt everything going too fast around her. The way you wrote the story—focusing on some parts and leaving out the others—really worked for the ending.

The ending was brilliant! It was so powerful, Even though this was a tragedy, at least the ending gave some hope. Overall, I think you did a really good job. Thanks for the read!

WHY YOU GOTTA BREAK ME LIKE THIS?
This is so beautifully dark. You've woven such an incredible plot, and I wasn't ready for the ending the first time I read it. Lucius's complexity and depth wasn't something I was expecting, especially given the first scene, but I really appreciated that we actually got a (sweet, romantic, reasonable) explanation for his actions. AND NARCISSA I feel so bad for her and can completely understand why she would feel that way toward Draco if she didn't have the full story.
You wrote this entire story with an auspicious delicacy and elegance, especially the interlude between Lucius and Narcissa. I love the way you closed the story with a reflection on it - "my marriage only lasted one precious, loving, blessed night that the Gods envied us so much they doomed us for it." It really reminded me of "Annabel Lee" by Edgar Allan Poe, which is a person favorite of mine (even if it is a tiny bit cliche).
Gorgeous work, my dear, even if it did break my heart! I love reading anything you write!

I liked the story. Fate can be a bitch. Sad, but well done!

beautiful
Beedle chapter 1 . 10/4/2018
This was a compelling fic, I read the whole thing avidly.

The descriptions of Narcissa's initial jealousy of her own child in her womb, the anger at becoming no more than a "discardable vessel", and not the sole object of Lucius' attentions, are very well done.

Lucius' drunken raving in bed, to the child, to her, to himself was quite horrifying. And the threads of confusion and desperation running through this, mingled with your visceral descriptions, work beautifully.

Just a couple of small things I noticed:
"those words had not been meant to her" - is there a missing word here?
"well-practiced" - should be"well-practised"

But overall fab job, I very much enjoyed reading this.
