Probably easier for people, specifically the girls, to “accept” MC’s sociopathic tendencies if he makes up some “accident” that makes him that way. Maybe daphne already sort of knows but even she probably just thinks he’s ambitious at this point. Hermione is completely in the dark. I doubt if he came out of the blue saying everything about him she thought she knew was a lie, it would work out too well between them. Much easier to engineer a scenario, probably saving the girls life, that has the unfortunate side effect of muting his emotions for others. Like if she’s told about the diadem being cursed and in order to save Hermione he “had to” put on Ravenclaw’s diadem, and in order to stop the “corruption” he has to destroy it which somehow messes with his emotions like they’re destroyed with the diadem or something. Hermione feels responsible cuz he had to save her and lost some empathy due to it, they struggle until Hermione finally breaks through his “new” lack of emotions though they’re only aimed at her and maybe a few others, they get together again and she’s more accepting of his “new” personality while acting as sort of a moral compass herself, and it ends up working cuz she’s not aware he ever lied to her. Perfect plan.
