Reviews for It's Not Just A Stick: A Wand Crafter's Story |

![]() ![]() ![]() Loved it. |
![]() ![]() It's hard to believe that Harry would be allowed to go to university field trips. Having a kid around that's possibly more interested in the topic than the students that do it as part of their course is cool and all, and many teachers would like to have such an enthusiastic participant. Attending lectures is easier, they're open to everyone most of the time anyway and most lecturers wouldn't care. But matriculated students are covered by insurance on a field trip. A random interested kid is not. It's a risk few uni administrations would allow to be taken. |
![]() ![]() ![]() he made luna a wand and wished to meet her... i wanted to read how he got the wand to her |
![]() ![]() *lol* No, Lucius, keep the peacocks! Just get the lizards. It'll be some time before you have to feed them, though, and the peacock problem solves itself. |
![]() ![]() Yeah, I feel with you! I've been on antidepressants for years now. I have no idea if I'm better and could stop taking them, or if I'm better because I still take them. And your message is correct: if you've got a problem, go to a specialist. Many people still think that depression patients are just loony/lazy, or that they just need to pull themselves together. But it's getting better as being accepted in society as an illness, and depression can be treated. There are behavioural therapies and there's medication that helps. Going to a psychiatrist really works! |
![]() ![]() A pet IS a big responsibility, something that Hagrid has never understood, because the responsibility is not only towards the pet('s needs), but also to everyone else who need to be protected against the pet. But a post owl is a bit of an exception. Their intelligence makes sure they're not an aggressive threat (except for rodents...), when they aren't needed they can go hunt for themselves, they can defend themselves, and are generally self-reliant. Only, a snowy owl, while flashy, isn't the best choice because she's not native. A barn owl would be best. By the way, Hedwig would most probably NOT sit on Harry's shoulder. Bubo scandiacus is one of the largest owl species in the world and Hedwig is a female, which are larger than the males. She'd probably sit with one foot on his shoulder, and claw Harry's head with the other to gain balance. There is a cartoon out there showing this about Draco and his eagle-owl, what Rowling describes and what it'd look like in reality. |
![]() ![]() The canon scene in the Leaky Cauldron never sat well with me. I hate Hagrid, he's stupid, selfish, and vicious. And that situation showed two of these attributes very well. He virtually shouted across the room that HARRY POTTER was with him, and that he was so important that he was accompanying HARRY POTTER to his first foray into the magical world! And then he took a step back and let two dozen adults jump on the little boy and fondle him. He should have protected Harry instead but was too stupid to see how distressing that was for the kid. But that's just one of my many gripes about Hagrid for that day (and many of them serious crimes), and the things he did before and after that day are just as or even more monstrous. Rowling wanted her (young) readers to see Hagrid as a good-natured blunderer, but if you take a look at what he DOES, he deserves nothing less than a Killing Curse in the face. |
![]() ![]() "Delightfully nerdy"? That's a beautiful appellation and a description of someone I would love to get to know! |
![]() ![]() ![]() Great story, read it more than once. Try telling a child not to tell the best friend ... xD yup that is gana work. very well done. |
![]() ![]() ![]() Nice story but it does lack either a sequel or an epilogue. If nothing less I would love to see Harry's interracting with Luna and her reaction to her new Wand. |
![]() ![]() ![]() No no |
![]() ![]() Hey, just wanted to let you know that I read this story and I love it. Hope you make a sequel if you're still alive. Keep up the good work! |
![]() ![]() ![]() Nowadays NyQuil has a specific warning on is package that it's not to be used to make a child sleep - though I suspect they're far more worried about cases where the one doing the making isn't the child themself! I do wonder when they added that, though, since the fic is set in 1991 and all. |

![]() ![]() ![]() Btw. This is another fine author that has left ffn to go to AO3. He had a few problems with trolls, but left due to ffn breaking down and not working correctly. Example, for the second time in just a few months, the mail/messages/notifications are broken. A few years ago, they limited the favorite stories segments visible on our member home page, due to using bandwidth. Makes sense. I have about 1300. We suggested they initiate multiple pages of 25, 50,or 100 as they do in all categories of fan fiction, so that template is readily available. They have never changed it, even after they said they would. As a reader, not author, i have not had troll problems, but many authors have. Most of them took their stories with them when they left. I, personally do not prefer the format on other sites, and choose not to establish accounts all over willy-nilly. I don't like to leave tracks for scammers, trolls, and hackers to pounce. Its like camping out. Don't screw with natural surroundings and leave it cleaner than you found it. Rant over. Nice job of dealing with the re-sorting, and Neville's wand. Good work shutting snape down. |
