jdota chapter 35 . 11/21/2021 I had actually typed most of this up some time after Ch 34, but never got around to finishing it. Now seems a good time to post it, since much of what I discuss is even more relevant after Ch 35. I edited most things to make sense, but a few things may still sound like they were written before 35 landed. This is definitely my favorites of all your SW fics. The initial premise was amazing, and you continued to put out high quality updates that covered multiple interesting plotlines. But as another reviewer said, the fic has definitely lost a lot of steam since returning from Mortis. Part of this is your updates slowed around then, and part of it is just that the plot had to re-align. However, now that things are starting to move again, I haven't been really liked where things are going. That isn't a complaint or even criticism. It's mostly just personal preference. Prior to this chapter, I wasn't entirely sure what was happening with Palpatine. At first he was ousted by vote, and it felt like your usual treatment where you sideline him, but I felt as long as he's alive he has tons of potential befitting his personal power – which seemed to be confirmed when he spied on that conversation at Dex's. But then there was that scene with Abeloth and Plagueis and the Clones, which I hadn't really liked AT ALL because I felt like it introduced/advanced/resolved too many things in such an abstract way that was disconnected from the actual plot. It also seemed Palpatine's plan was subverted by Plagueis as well and I thought he was wiped out of existence. But now it seems he's still clinging onto Leia, which was his plan before the Abeloth stuff anyways? Either way, I question if we'll ever get to see an epic fight with Palpatine in this fic – the one Luke spent half the fic preparing for. Especially after he was done dirty at the end of Mavericks. I was happy to see Dooku and Ventress again, and finally get some clearer explanations as to what happened with Plagueis/Abeloth. I think it's interesting to know that some part of Abeloth is still within Plagueis. It would be lame if he got all her powers, but none of her quirks. Those are what made her manageable in EU to begin with. In Ch34 I was getting different vibes about Anakin/Padme from your AN, vs Sabe then leaving. After she left Anakin/Padme reuniting seemed guaranteed, but seriously, the NEXT CHAPTER? It feels as if Padme rejecting Anakin after his return was just lip service to us readers. Fake drama for a few chapters. I felt you previously laid the groundwork to NOT have them reunite. Making Luke and Leia exist in the Force so you didn't need Anakin/Padme so they could be born. Having PADME be the one to end things six chapters back. The support Obi-Wan gave Anakin immediately afterwards – I felt that was supposed to be the first steps to Anakin moving on. But now a few chapters later and it seems all that flipped. Probably would've been even more jarring if not for the very long delay on chapters. I said this in a past review but I was never a fan of Anakin/Padme. While they were good for each other in some ways, they also brought each other down, as your previous AN noted. I don't even need to mention Anakin, since it's clear to see what becomes of him in ROTS. But even Padme is lesser by being with Anakin. Just look at how she reacts when she confronts Anakin in ROTS. Even after he flat out admits to his crimes she asks him to run away with her and put it all behind them. What right does she have to absolve him of his crimes? She's always held up as a respectable politician with strong morals and sense of justice, yet she was instantly willing to compromise everything she believed in for her bad boy man-child husband. She can't even say it was for her children, because if it was she would've realized the best thing for her children was being far away from Anakin. So I liked how you had seemed cut off the potential for Anakin and Padme to reunite, not just because I don't like the relationship, but because I wanted to see both of them, especially Anakin, grow without the other. Anakin almost never grows as a person in most fics. Either things go the same as canon and he becomes Vader, who has little growth until Luke comes on scene. Or, somehow everything works out, either through time travel or plot divergence, and Anakin forever remains a man-child with and overly idealistic outlook and unrealistic expectations. In some fandoms it can be satisfying when everything just works out, but I never really liked it in SW with Anakin. It undermines all his themes: the war that one wages with oneself. Trying to do what is right vs what you want. Thinking you can have both if you just try hard enough. It's not as though I want Anakin to suffer, but I think it's a necessary foil for his character. He was a slave and experienced injustice first hand. Then it turns out he's the Chosen One. It's going to make him think if he's the strongest, he'll never lose anyone, and he can fix all injustices. But that's never true. And sadly he needs to learn that first hand by losing what he cares about. The truest measure of his strength is how he'll respond when that happens. For me a good fic is one where he rises above. Not one where the entire plot is subverted and he never has to face those problems in the first place. Obi-Wan says it best in 'Astute Panic,' no matter how powerful you are, you can't expect to always save the ones you love. The Force isn't a wish granting machine. You do the best you can. Death is a part of life. The only way to overcome your fears is to face them. Maybe his experiences on Mortis taught him those lessons, but it would feel superficial. Yes, his experience there sucked, but if all it amounts to is visions of what could have been, it would just feel very shallow. Qui-Gon said a while back that redeeming himself in Luke and Leia's eyes would be Anakin's hardest task, but… Luke had already forgiven him before they even met. And Leia will probably forgive him if he helps her with Palpatine, or after she struggles with her own darkness and thus empathizes with him more. So Qui-Gon's warning now seems like hot air, just like Anakin's claim this chapter that he could 'let Padme go'. Pfft, as if. A few chapters of pouting and they're back. Based on your previous AN I assumed you had similar thoughts about their relationship, and how them getting back together is not healthy for either of them. But… here we are. I usually try not to let it influence my opinion of a fic, but the pairings and romance are either becoming distracting, or I'm simply not a fan of them. -I already said enough about Anakin and Padme. I don't like it, but I accept it's basically the only canon pairing to work with, and is the focus of 90% of SW fanfics. Still, I was disappointed you spent a lot of time setting up a legitimate path to subvert it, but instead swung straight back around to it after a few token chapters apart. -Obi-Wan and Satine is okay, though you always do it the same. Obi-Wan, Satine, Mandalore, Clones, Oh My! It feels stale now that you're updating this fic again, though this technically was started before some of the others. Plus, half the time your 35 y/o Obi-Wan and Satine act the same as your teenager Harry Potter couples in their first relationships. So much of their dialog is gag-worthy. I don't think Satine has been in a SINGLE scene without some romantic comment/pet-name to Obi-Wan, no matter the circumstances. -I'm not really a big fan of Luke and Ahsoka either, which is obviously getting more development now that Luke has a body. I hadn't wanted to see it again after you did it in Kenobi Scandal, and I felt Luke's character would've been better off being single in this fic. He reminds me more of Obi-Wan in canon, staying true to the tenants of the Order even if he doesn't always agree with them, or when the Order itself fails to uphold them. It made sense in Kenobi Scandal since Luke was hardly a Jedi and was more just a kid trying to fit in. Here Luke was single in the original trilogy, and just got his own body in the past, and BAM, pairing. I'm also just a bit tired of Ahsoka's character. She's basically a female Anakin (wild, reckless, fun, aggressive, emotional, and passionate), but with little to no consequences. It's obvious how biased Filoni is towards his creation. I guess it makes her character appealing to many, but to me she's become boring. Almost like a Mary Sue. That isn't your fault, but I'm sick of her in canon, to say nothing of fan fiction. To be fair her role in this fic isn't that huge, but I feel like pairing her with Luke would change that, and I really think Luke would work best single in this fic. -I'll admit Leia and Cody is new, and sounds interesting, but that's all I have to say about it right now. I'm still not sure how much of that was actually Leia? I know defying the no attachment rule is the main reason most people write SW fanfic, but it's dull when the fic feels like nothing but a race to pair up every notable character/Jedi ASAP, which is what the second half of this fic has become. I've lost a lot of interest in this fic, but this isn't really a complaint. I think besides Anakin/Padme reuniting – which I am very critical of how it was handled – most of the other things I haven't liked in the second half are just a matter of personal preference. This just… doesn't even feel like the same fic it was prior to Mortis, and almost every plotline it's focusing on now I don't have any interest in. The Leia/Palpatine stuff is good, but I don't know if it's enough to carry a fic that was previously so epic. I don't really know if anything can besides Plagueis with Abeloth's powers, but that plotline really has barely even started yet. I'll probably continue checking updates, but for me the fic basically ended at Mortis. |
doraemax chapter 35 . 11/20/2021 Han... we need you. Perhaps the wisdom of the streets can show the way.. huhu |
doraemax chapter 33 . 11/20/2021 I am indeed loving this. Except for one element, which is not your fault. The whole Mother, Father, Son, Daughter thing should have never been... too 'Originals' for me. |
changingdestiny40 chapter 35 . 11/19/2021 For the author of this fic and other reviewers here: I personally don’t know about problems with the email alerts here but I received an alert for this chapter twice, first a little around 12 A.M. and then another this morning. And I also received an alert today for another unrelated story I’m following. If there was a problem with fic alerts here earlier, to me but it now appears it was fixed. Also to the author but thanks for this new chapter and good job. And very nice to see Anakin and Padme get back together and hopefully the heroes will be able to save Leia and stop the Sith. |
batmanuchiha chapter 35 . 11/19/2021 let's hope that this sends emails to my inbox now |
skrapsynneh chapter 35 . 11/19/2021 Thank you for the chapter. I look forwards to more. |
Mattroxursoul chapter 35 . 11/18/2021 Love the chapter. I am one of the people who do not like Padme and Anakin match. They really have next to nothing in common. While she can be fierce at times she is a wannabe pacifist. Anakin is a take action person who is pretty much a war criminal even before he falls. |
BeautifulArbiterDreamland chapter 35 . 11/18/2021 You’re in love Cody. There are different levels of it and you’re just starting to tread the surface. X Also. F*** Palpatine. |
