I get that by it’s nature, panic is often unthinking and illogical. Even so, this scene seems really odd to me. There’s no real period of disbelief, or wonder, or curiosity, or denial. It’s straight to panic. And in that panic, the goal is to run away … run away from the known, where at the very least he is safe and protected for several years, quite literally into the wilderness, where he would starve to death, to be killed by the many bandits, or captured by the dozens of enemy spies, to then have his eyes ripped out of his skull, and hopefully be killed instead of vivsected.
Like I said, seems odd to me, even for someone panicking.

Sad, such a good story. And when it finally gets to the REALLY good parts, the author gives up... Sometimes I wonder if it's worth getting so invested in a story that you know won't have an ending
