Knowing Hakus dedication to the one he(or she) is sworn to, it would be crazy useful to take zabuza's place. If Shikamaru goes on the Wave mission, and he manages to make sure that Haku is alive while Zabuza dies, possibly by defeating Haku, then Haku can give him the story after asking to sie, and Shikamaru can say something like "Your only purpose is to be someone's tool?", haku says yes, shikamaru then says "then live for my dreams" or something like that.
Haku was never a shinobi of any village or country, which means that while the Hokage would almost certainly require a Yamanaka confirm Haku's loyalty to Shikamaru, which he would want to happen so he could be certain Haku had no plans to get vengeance later, Haku could be recruited for Konoha. In fact, Shikamaru can even say to Asuma that he's taking Haku into his clan, but for the safety on Konoha and his clan he will have Inoichi confirm Haku's intentions. That way since clans complicate the issue Asuma isn't prepared to outright deny him, perhaps saying that it needs to be places before the Hokage. And when that happens, Shikamaru can say "This is a matter of the Nara clan, however for securities sake Inoichi will personally verify Haku's honesty and report his findings to you and me, and no other. If Haku is lying, I'll kill him myself. If he's not, then this matter is not a matter for the village to decide." or something along those lines. And since the Nara clan techniques are a secret skill taught rather than a bloodline, the elders should support his effort to add a bloodline user to the clan. If Haku is truly a tool there won't be any objection to knocking up a few clan women. My point is that the clan would happily jump on the chance to add to their clans potential. Even if Haku was opposed to being ordered to produce children, the clan could instead merely encourage a real relationship with a clan member. But given Haku's personality, I expect if Shikamaru told him to knock up the women on the clan elders list he'd do it without fuss. All of which sums up as Shikamaru acquires a body guard of tremendous skill and immense experience that literally grew up fighting for his life against Hunter ninja, and that will happily die for him.
Of course maybe this is all pointless because you either have something else in mind for wave or don't intend to do wave at all.

I love the body/mind understanding; the body doesn't get it's fair (real) part of the decision making in most reincarnation fics.

Ruh Roh Shaggy! I wonder whether SI going on the Wave mission will be worse than if Wave doesn't have any help at all. Judging by Asuma's by-the-book attitude he'd 100% leave Tazuna to die once he found out the mission was misranked due to the client.
